It’s getting colder. Winter is maybe coming or not yet but soon probably.
I’m playing Dawn of Sorrow for the first time and it’s really pleasant. Also ordered me some Like a Dragon Gaiden for my PS4 and a horror visual novel for Switch.
Also looking forward to exploring icy alien planets in Dead Space 3 and Lost Planet 3.
What do you play when it’s cold outside? What makes you feel warm inside?
A lot of Yakuza games are set near or after Christmas which always gave me cozy winter vibes. Yakuza 5’s Mountain Village/Sapporo section is probably the best.
all the recently available saga remakes and remasters and scarlet grace are tempting, but for comfiness i know i would be satisfied with legend of mana on switch as a handheld sloppy action kawazu-lite
SotN feels weirdly Christmas-y (or not weirdly; it is, after all, about staying at your dad’s house as an adult and being extremely uncomfortable)
Foggy N64 games are cozy like being snowed in
Every year around Christmas I consider replaying Final Fantasy VII, because that’s what I did on Christmas Day 1998, when I got the PC version. I think I’ve only done that once, though.
Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Got it for christmas and spent the next month co-oping it with Alicia. The music all sounds christmasy to me, even the non snow levels.
SotN is a good call, but Aria of Sorrow is more homey to me. the cool blue palettes are like coming home (yes i think this is on purpose because Theming)
Wintertime is when you put down the fpses and pick up the adventure and 4x games. Games you can play with one hand on the mouse so the other can be in your blanket
the thread title makes me dimly remember someone on here saying years ago “i want to play through the Winters part of Earthbound on Christmas morning while drinking a mug of cocoa and then go downstairs and open presents”
anyway Earthbound that games like soul food
i also strongly think of Divinity Original Sin 2 (or Baldies Gate 3 which i want someone to buy me for xmas) something that invites u to get wrapped up in it for hours and slowly work through every turn in the fights, like you’re playing a board game. I didn’t mean to type Baldies Gate but im keeping it
honestly that’s the vibe, turn based/slow paced games that have similar comfiness as visiting family and playing clue or risk
I think most of my choices are probably heavily bent toward “these were games I got as a kid around Christmas,” which I guess would make sense.
Symphony of the Night and AC DS have been covered, so let’s see…
Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Baby’s first owned video game, hell yeah. Not a Christmas vibe in this thing (maybe it’s cold in Mystic Cave Zone, and the chemicals in Chemical Plant Zone have to be chilly if they’re not caustic), but boy howdy, it takes me right back to my grandma’s house, gettin’ that Genesis for Christmas.
Shenmue: Rumor has it there’s a season beyond winter in this game. But I rushed through it and finished it, in-game and in-real-life, before Christmas, because I had a gently used PAL copy of Shenmue 2 waiting for me under the tree. Big ass crack in that case, though. What was with the shitty plastic they used for those PAL Dreamcast cases. Anyway I saw drunk Japanese Santa wandering around Dobuita before I got into my grueling, grossly underleveled fight with Chai at the end. That’s Christmas right there…
Snowrunner: Whether it’s the snow levels or not, you just know the mud is cold as shit. It’s nice, it’s quiet. You and a truck and some cargo, navigating the thick of it. Ain’t that just life.
post reminds me i originally got Myst + Riven (5 disc CD-ROMs baybeee) in a boxed set as a Christmas gift, complete with a journal for notekeeping and/or fanfictioning myself as a traveler through the Ages. whats cozier than that
come to think of it i got Exile and Uru as Xmas gifts too
