Soccer is fortunately one of the easiest sports to understand what’s going on in.
There’s a ball, and both teams want to get it into the goal. You aren’t allowed to touch the ball with your hands unless you’re the goalie, whose job is to protect the goal from balls.
They play for 45 minutes, take a break, and then play for 45 more minutes. When the time is up, the game is over, and games can end in a draw.
There’s more strategy going on of course but the basic idea is easy enough to follow.

The main action in soccer is that the team with the ball will attempt to get into a good position to kick on the goal before the defending team can get into a defensive position. Its usually easier to get into a defensive position than an offensive position, which is why soccer is a low scoring game.
Additionally teams will likely play with aggressive or defensive tactics. An aggressive team paired with a defensive team, or two aggressive teams, makes for a match that’s fun to watch. Two defensive teams is a miserable watch, that’s what Americans think all soccer looks like, you’re better off just letting the game put you to sleep.
