Circuit City on the Edge of Forever

no no I definitely need it to be a second, distinct PC

currently my computing setup is a 2015 macbook pro, an ipad pro from 2016, an iphone 8, and a raspberry pi 400. everything except the pi was a hand-me-down but i’m starting to wonder if maybe you get diminishing returns after the fourth roughly equivalently-powerful device

Steam Deck seems just plain good. Downloaded Elden Ring at 600 Mbps and it’s running as well as I can imagine a handheld ever doing it

Build quality is a step above the Index and ten steps above the original Steam controller in my estimation

I still can’t really see wanting one (my years of wanting to be staring intently enough at a tiny screen while something is concurrently happening on Big Screen are maybe drawing down and I have enough other hacks for doing what it does), but I like that it seems to be enforcing expectations for games to run lower-spec and lower-resolution (and to a lesser extent through Proton, though I’ve done enough of that for one lifetime already), because continuing to ship games in a <5 fp32 tflop envelope, with maybe faster storage or CPUs, is a good thing

If they scale up production of these to where they’re regularly in stock no one should buy one of those Android portables again

oh yeah that whole market space remains kind of mystifyingly shoddy to me, but in fairness, so does the idea of waiting to be able to run PS1 games on a mister when there are perfectly good emulators right there, so I think I’m just bemused by a lot of the past couple years’ reinvention

Oh, and it isn’t really for me, bought it for my partner who has at least 2 screens going at all times and most recently has been playing Roller Coaster Tycoon Classics on her iPad mini so she’s psyched to have small screen Elden Ring

Is there some kind of adhesive one can buy that has the same properties as the stuff they use to fix cushions and friction pads onto mice and such? I need to do a teardown on my mouse to clean it up and fix the RMB, but that means peeling off the friction tabs, and then it will never be the same again. The rubber grip pads on the sides are also starting to peel.

This is a perfectly good mouse otherwise (SteelSeries Rival 310) so it feels a bit wasteful to go and buy a brand new one.

The only solution I’ve heard of so far is painstakingly cutting up double-sided tape to the right shape, and I am also told this makes it a huge PITA to peel off later down the line.

what are friction tabs? the PTFE material on the bottom of the mouse?

You can just buy replacement ā€œfeetā€ or ā€œskatesā€ for your mouse with 3M adhesive already applied e.g.

Yep. Sorry if that is just simply not the term for them.

I kind of hate the idea of treating those things as disposable, and having to buy new ones every time I service it, but if there’s no other option… I would also like similar for the rubber grip pads on either side. I don’t see that on this site, but I’ll try looking around.

Edit: Oh. The official SteelSeries website sells them: 310 Side Grip Packs | SteelSeries

this texturing stuff that came with this logitech has done nothing but slide around and smear gunk everywhere

sounds right. it’s not so hard to remove again later, if you have appropriate tools (get some vet hemostats)

This was a scammer lmao. I’m currently fighting eBay to get my money back.

Steam Deck continues to just rock. Hard to fathom the value of getting ā€œSwitch portsā€ of my existing Steam library, especially since I’ve been buying games primarily on Steam for over a decade. Nevermind no fuss setting up emulators, etc.

Wow I have non-buyers remorse now

I’m starting a new job and have enough disposable income now to consider buying stuff.

is it more worth it in terms of both hassle/bang for buck to try to get a decent newish video card or a PS5? I don’t really know what either situation is like right now with supply chain issues/shortages, etc.

ps5 is terrible even I got a computer

easily prefer an xbonx, though there’s no denying it can’t play bloodborne

it’s hard to say when a GPU will feel like an actually good decision again (hopefully after the 5nm parts come out in a few months but like… prices could triple, who knows), but the PS5 is just not a great product compared to other options and shows few signs of becoming one. I would get an XBS/X if you don’t have hardware that can run equivalent games and are in a hurry, and wait for GPUs if not

got a 3070 last year at msrp (so considerably cheaper than a ps5) and still not convinced it was a good call vs waiting. has made minimal difference to my life!!! and some of the games i’ve been excited about have run like shit anyway

so i’d hang on either way
