Circuit City on the Edge of Forever

Do any desktop monitors have automatic brightness sensors+adjustment like phones do nowadays? My home office’s lighting conditions vary a lot

The thought of ionizing radiation in 5GHz wireless turns me into Julianne Moore in Safe, so I’m looking to retvrn to cables too.

5GHz is nowhere near energetic enough to be ionizing, that frequency is 5 orders of magnitude less than even red light. Your electrons will remain safely attached to their atoms even if you make your bed out of wifi access points.

EM radiation starts becoming ionizing around 2.9PHz

not to mention the energy usage, I’d be more worried about my electric bill

My brain rearranged the words in this post to imagine that the 5Ghz band is turning you and possibly me into Julianne Moore. Much more fun

My BenQ monitor has something called HDRi which kind of does this, but it is only for HDR. Unfortunately HDR isn’t that great on this thing.

Asking for a friend: if someone has a BA but after working in various sales and admin positions for a decade would prefer to change careers to something more technical / less sales oriented, are these “advanced certificates in software development” or “networking systems and technology, associates in applied sciences” programs offered by accredited colleges worth anything in the job market? Looking specifically at some of the programs offered by City Colleges of Chicago for example

I’m old and don’t understand any educational pipeline beyond the high school → 4 year degree → career (?) meat grinder. Also I went to college during the heyday of for-profit 2 year degree places like Full Sail, ITT Tech, and that one school that used to run late night commercials where the guy gets sucked into the computer screen which (as far I know) were basically scams.

They’re better than a “boot camp” but not as good as a university STEM degree. The CCC Software Development program you linked looks like it teaches some pretty useful skills, and I expect you would get a job after graduating, especially if the job market for programmers remains as hot as it is today.

I would suggest choosing the programming track rather than the networking track because those skills will have more flexibility, growth potential and staying power. And if the option is available for you, a master’s in computer science would result in a higher salary (I realize this suggestion may be impractical for various reasons, but since you have a BA it seems remiss not to mention it – tech compensation is now stratified from 5 figures all the way to 7 figures, so getting on a higher rung of qualifications can easily double your income).

The best blog on technical careers today is https://blog.pragmaticengineer.com/. Although most of the content is targeted at midcareer engineers, I think you may find it helpful anyway.

Flatiron is well liked iirc, I have friends who got good opportunities out of it, and Recurse is free if you’re self-starting enough and can convince them to take a chance on you (I am a Recurse alumnus)

Update: NVIDIA has allegedly managed to breach the hackers by inflicting them with ransomware and successfully encrypting its stolen data of over 1 TB.

for that matter imagine the damage Lisa Su would inflict

stick to retailers without CISOs

actually fascinated by the legal implications of castle doctrine for exfiltrated data tbh I’m not sure this is strictly above board

Gonna say, seems like going public with your vigilante action in response to being wronged seems not smart

It shows Nvidia fears criminal groups more than law enforcement. They think it’s a net gain to send a message that discourages the former and pisses off the latter

Thank you Broco and Felix, that is really helpful information to have. Will start looking into
Masters program and see what we can come up with. Money isn’t the biggest of concerns (within reason) so if it would be possible to get a masters in three years instead of an associates in 2 that seems like a no brainer

what law enforcement group is going to hear about nvidia giving ransomware to people who stole from them and think “well that’s a crime.” an entity like nvidia does something like that it doesn’t rise to the level of crime like it would be if you or me did that

Yeah, no prosecutor is going to take that, but I’m curious if this becomes the norm for companies with the capability

I’m about to go to a Micro Center for some canned air and thermal paste. What other fun computer doodads/crafting materials are worth picking up to have on hand?

Destroying data stolen from you is, in a very american tech kind of thinking, surely just doing what you want with your stuff, since the Data shouldn’t have been exfiltrated in the first place?

The bad thing about this is that some CIA or FBI bro will want to have that for everything now, from MS Notepad to their most ancient COBOL software…
