In 2024 then, when scalpers will have given up on hoarding them?

It is still very silly that the 2021 MBPs don’t have a single type-A port.

kind of sad that it’s still using USB Micro instead of moving to Type-C, but I guess they’re sticking to the form factor for a generation or two and this seems like a nice little update

Installing Windows 11 ARM insider builds in Parallels to see if I can get away with not having a Windows machine.

Backup plan: Azure VM exclusively for PowerBI

Update: works flawlessly lol

are we sure that’s arm-on-arm? that’s obviously extremely good but it’s like a 50% hit from native, I wonder if the virtualization implementation isn’t as mature as x86

The VM only has 4 cores, so it looks about right considering?

docked macbook woes - I'm very vitriolic in here and I'm sure people are tired of me complaining about Apple so maybe don't read this if that's you

The macbook has to be the worst possible laptop to use docked. It is a miserable experience. I just want to use it like a computer hooked up to a monitor and a keyboard, and then sometimes take it away and use it as a laptop. Below is a list of problems I have encountered trying to use it docked:

  • If it is not plugged in, then closing the lid puts it to sleep even if it’s plugged into a monitor, mouse and keyboard. Technically this is not supposed to happen - it does happen
  • I cannot wake it up from sleep with the keyboard or mouse I have plugged in. I have to open the lid to do that.
    • The fucked up thing about this is that if I hit space or whatever on my USB keyboard, the computer does wake up - the fans start spinning and everything. But nothing comes up on my monitor. I still have to open the lid.
  • If I close the lid too soon after waking it up and unlocking it, then it goes back to sleep whether or not it is plugged in. I have to make sure my monitor is getting signal before I close it again
  • I am required to use the macbook’s built-in keyboard to unlock it after a hard shutdown. In fact, if I so much as touch my USB keyboard, I have to restart the entire machine because it will start ignoring 75% of my inputs on the built-in keyboard.
  • Apparently most of the heat management is done passively, because I’ve certainly noticed that the metal above the touchbar gets hot. That means that when the lid is closed, the fans are constantly running.
  • Minor but, it stores different resolutions for the monitor whether the lid is open or closed, so if I want to change it I have to change it twice.

I assume most of these problems stem from using a non-apple-branded keyboard and mouse, but the keyboard and mouse work 100% perfectly fine in every other situation. I’m not going to buy a keyboard that is unpleasant to type on for way too much money just so I can use this already-expensive piece of shit docked without going into conniptions.

I despise Apple. Every time I try to use the macbook in a slightly-unintended way it’s like pushing a car uphill in a windstorm. Everything is working against me.

On the other hand, the software for my mouse and the separate software for my keyboard just completely fail to launch on Windows no matter what I do and I’m stuck with whatever profiles I set up a year ago. So maybe computers are just bad.

FYI there is zero advantage to using apple’s own peripherals on a Mac, everything connects as a generic device anyway. I’m always very surprised how many people they think have to buy an apple mouse or something.

i mean, i just assume these things to be true partially because Apple is often giving that impression on purpose, and partially because i have zero interest in learning more about macs so i never do any research

don’t worry i’m not buying anything from apple if i can help it

the touch bar macs are just that bad, i’ve had 3 of them now (all work computers) and they all had different weird heat, docking, & sleep/wake issues

if that’s the case, i suspect my impression of apple is really biased since this is my first long-term experience with them. maybe it’s just one bad laptop lol
