Cartoons (Part 1)

,

This week Mob Psycho 100 has too much high power. Best chapter so far.

Crunchyroll advertised MP100 during both parts of the season 4 premiere of Ripper Street on BBC America

I’m going to assume they know something I don’t

I’m not sure what goes here and what goes in anime thread.

But Zambot 3’s last half has been pretty consistently amazing.

So after lots of lots of my friends told me to watch Bojack I finally picked up and welll… is not bad, I enjoy some parts of it. But I have to put an effort to keep watching. It’s part I’m not really in the mood for another “adult life is depressing” show and because I find it really boring visually. Same models in same scenarios doing the same poses. Which I guess is part of the course for shows like this, but for some reason is more grating this time.

Finally give it a pass to Re:Zero. And yeah, it’s fairly good. I definitely give it points for allowing its protagonist to do bonehead things and going “yeah, he’s being an idiot” instead of passing it as noble. May get worse later, but so far the execution is good so I can keep with it.

Mob Psycho is still stellar, by the way.

Bojack horseman doesnt get good until about halfway thrpugh the first season and it gradually ramps up and seems less mediocre/generic over the rest of the series

Saw Kubo & the Two Strings on a whim, knowing nothing about it and having seen none of the other stuff that studio’s made. Pretty neat movie! I enjoy films for children about suffering and death and Cool Moms. Took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that at least some of the movie was actually stop-motion animation, to go with the 3DCG emulating stop-motion animation.

Two chapters more and Re:Zero is turning to “suffer, you bastard MC” mode. Acting like a LN protagonist is not paying off here it seems. I chuckled at the end of chapter 15 though.

I would suggest that studio’s Paranorman, I really think it’s an underappreciated gem.

That Drifters pilot is some repulsive violence porn that irks me more than the goriest 90s OVA. (I’m actually a big fan of gory 90s OVAs.) Probably because of the comedy bits inbetween the smashed-in heads? Or how it paints the characters as role models? Huh, maybe it’s the difference between deliberate and tasteless. I’ll try to not watch it next season.

Berserk on the other hand continues to be very watchable and is revving up more and more, can’t wait for next episode! Thank god I read the manga too many years ago to remember what happens next.

controversial opinion: Battle Tendency is good, Stardust Crusaders is not

it’s really pretty and i want to like it but it is just so much blander and more shonen and none of the characters have anywhere near the same charm

very tempted to just skip to arc 4, or the dio fight that arc 3 is obviously just going to build up to forever

I still like Stardust Crusaders, and there’s some good stuff scattered throughout, but it’s kind of a transitional arc. Gets better as they get closer to/into Egypt.

The old 90s OAVs are really different in tone but are pretty neat on their own, if you want to skip to 6 episodes of HOT HOT HITS (ignore the late 90s ones leading up to Egypt).

Meanwhile, on a show no one cares about:

Active Raid has set up its last episode to be about a colony drop. Mostly, I’m just sad to see it go.

JUSTICE will be missed.

Mob Psycho 100 is acceptable, though they really don’t dwell on basically anything and that’s throwing me a bit

I appreciate how in ONE’s stuff the characters and plots just kind of wash over you in a rate that’s too much to actually take in or remember. It’s kinda like Venture Bros on amphetamines?

Yeah, it’s actually kind of refreshing - anime pacing is still generally a bit more strung out
And it’s meant in this instance they can spend more on pretty remarkable action sequences

I am watching a whole lot of trash

nobody else should probably watch it, but I’m having a good time and I guess I wanted to let you all know

okay bye~
