i appreciate ranma, a story where perverts are constantly owned
GOD ok sorry to be a contrarian or whatever i’m being but we’re watching the remake as it airs, and i’ve never gotten into it before, and this whole Shampoo arc rn is SO orientalist and kinda sexist… the number of times in this show Akane is convinced to step back even when she’s completely correct about a situation??
yeah! old mate was pointing to the page in the manga of her, possessing Ken, inspecting between Momo’s legs as evidence of her pursuing that mission … that reading of the scene did not occur to me but it’s nice to believe. maybe she’s just being tsundere about it the whole rest of the time we actually see her
yeah the whole thing is REALLY a Brechtian exercise in finding your own take on the whole thing i think. which is good practice for someone like me tbh!
@eska i haven’t watched the remake, and don’t feel a need to, but there’s no doubt the source material not a perfect text whatsoever
i just liked that little shit happosai getting smacked around for being a pest
i’ve not got to that point yet, but i’ll view attentively!
Did some scatter-gunning around what animation was easily available on the vpn-bays recently. Ended up with some nice stuff I plan to slowly work through. I watched all these in one night a couple of weeks ago.
Patlabor: The Movie (1989 - subbed):
No surprise, I enjoyed it a lot. I’ve seen it discussed here several times but I would just add that it feels like a very balanced work. Characters had well formed motivations and the story made sense. I’ve never experienced any other Patlabor media but this stands on its own. Music felt like it was right on the edge of cheesy once or twice but rode a really good line for me. Would like to find a dub of this for a second watch.
Crusher Joe: The Movie (1983 - dubbed):
Not as good as Patlabor and way more problematic, but I found it fun and laughed quite a bit at the good natured parts. The majority of it is fine but the main bad part (wildly insensitive portrayal of a mentally disabled person) was upsetting and really annoying. I wonder how bad it was with the original dialog. The character was not in too much of the movie though and the other characters were all pretty fun from what I remember.
It has real satisfying “cool movie made for bad boys” vibes, and after watching Patlabor, I enjoyed the daftness of it all.
Mister Magoo’s Christmas Carol (1962)
Not many jokes in here. Kind of a melancholy musical, but pleasant. It’s a frame story where Magoo is an actor who is late to play Ebeneezer Scrooge on Broadway and all of the slapstick occurs in this frame. The character he plays doesn’t seem to be very affected by the actors vision issues. It’s kind of a straight ahead retelling dotted with musical numbers of varying quality with the best song being a very sad but pretty breakup ballad during the Ghost of Christmas Past’s visit. Strangely, they switch the order of appearance of the spirits to present, past, future instead of the traditional past, present, future. At the end of the day, there is a pointing skeleton in it so big thumbs up from me.
they walked back the lips huh
That almost made me tear up… after such a long time, my expectations have already retired, so if this means we will get a properly translated blu-ray and some more episodes out of it, i am so, so, SO READY FOR IT
is sakamoto days any good, seems like my kind of whimsical trash
I didn’t really like the couple episodes I gave the first season of this compared with the last for a few reasons (I didn’t like what they did with Richter’s backstory nearly as much as Trevor’s, I really missed the great way they wrote Sypha, and the French Revolution thing feels kind of like a hokey way of engaging with the subject matter) but I see they brought Alucard back so that’s nice
I see the bits of Richter having a DBZ fight in mid-air and I feel further energized to bang my drum of the title Castlevania means little for this work. I’ll still sit down to watch it in frustration.
ankama have recently started uploading season 1 of the wakfu cartoon to youtube, in english and french. i remember really liking this when it came out, hopefully it hasn’t aged horribly~
Oh fuuuuck yes
