i loved this show as a kid, and i can’t believe no-one’s ever done a mashup of its opening theme with killer queen

I have a burnt dvd copy of an old VHS I used to have that has Dorothy in the Land of Oz on it, and I watch it every Thanksgiving. It’s not great; I probably know the words to every song.

A friend from ye olde internete has started a weekly anime club, and all involved, myself included, are true blue christian god-fearing weeb-ass anime enjoyers. This means there is no lower limit to what we will watch, and zero accounting for taste.

Here are the things we’ve watched recently:

Record of Load-Ass War

This was quite good for about the first half. The art style is really cool, the world feels lived-in, it was a grittier and more ā€œrealisticā€ take on fantasy than you often see in anime.

Big thirsting from our group for Orson (rage mode) and Shiris.

THEN it switches to Chronicles of the Heroic Knight with a completely different cast with perhaps the worst dub ever achieved, and they truly just meander around without direction until the show runs aground. If this was a ttrpg, like it was based on, this would be like a GM having a falling out with his entire friend group and carrying the campaign over to random drifters in a comic store, and all of the drifters suck.

The intro fucking ROCKS by the way and writes a lot of checks the show cannot cash:

I was struck by how dragons are sort of pitched into this show at random points to give a big fight, then do not become relevant otherwise. It is very D&D in that you can just grab some super-monsters from lore and throw it in, thus making it seem arbitrary, because like, are there 20 superdragons out there? Are there 5? At one point a king of all dragons shows up and like, I don’t remember him being explained or built up to? Weird show. Deedlit is the best part of course, and I ultimately became a huge Garrack stan because his voice actor fucking blows it big time with every blessed word he speaks. Extremely funny to me.

ALSO, THESE LITTLE TACHIKOMA DAYS SHORTS AT THE END OF EACH EP END UP BECOMING SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER THAN THE SHOW ITSELF, A SCATHING INDICTMENT OF THE QUALITY OF THE SHOW

Chobits

True and complete agony.

Higarashi: Those Who Cry

True and complete agony.

My Deer Friend Nokotan

True and complete agony.

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War

Really enjoyed this one. Everything in my body is telling me they can’t possibly keep this premise going for more than a handful of episodes, but then they do, and to great effect. Big fan.

Otachan!

True and complete agony. Irony-poisoned 4chan slop.

Suicide Squad Isekai

True and complete agony.

Bang Brave Bang Bravern

Overall I liked this, but it started getting distracting how thoroughly he’d need to fail before he exploded into saving the day in 20 seconds. Nice seeing a show this gay.

Oshi no Ko

Completely insane show which I can’t seem to get into. Everyone else loves it.

Go! Go! Loser Ranger!

Okay I was not into this at all for a while but as it got deeper and deeper into the shit I really got on-board. Once the main guy and his friend infiltrate the sentai squad, I really started to like this.

Getter Robo Armageddon

LEGENDARY. Holy shit this rocks, amazing show. This is what it’s all about, folks.

Ruin Explorers

Absolutely loved this. It is a very short OVA with a cast of very fun characters, and that goofy Slayers-like style that I dearly miss. Very cartoony and kintetic.

Unfortunately, after about three episodes, it doesn’t know what to do with any of this and defaults into a bog-standard evil wizard they must thwart or the world will etc etc etc. Tragic.

I’m actively looking to get my hands on the manga version of this, because I really was charmed over by the concept and style of it all.

Macross 7, Macross Frontier, Macross Delta

I am an enormous fan of the original Macross and DYRL. I really respect the way later Macross series show society dramatically and irrevocably changed by the events of the previous show, and I love how fun and functional the tech is.

I do not actually enjoy watching any Macross past the first series/movie. I can respect their decision to turn music into a form of magic, but that wasn’t what the original series was doing, it was more about the power and draw of culture, and its ability to sway millions.

It’s now become a sort of dystopian setting where music is weaponized in war and like… man… I don’t think that’s really what the O.G. was aiming for. I can get behind it if they wanted to depict it as being a fucked-up military engine that turns propaganda into weaponry but they’re also not interested in doing that. :expressionless:

Big fan of the huge-ass giantess characters continuing to show up! Showing both scales of people co-existing is really cool.

Look giant ladies and giant robots can be extremely load bearing elements for the right kind of person.

(The kind of person who shall remain nameless in this thread.)

That said, I have never watched past the original series besides the immaculately good Macross+, which sounds like it actually sticks to the OG series themes better from your description here? It feels like an exploration of vocaloids and vtubers twenty years early.

Klan Klang was kind of a miracle of the right horny bastard or bastette in the right place, though Max Genius being the most author-wish-fulfillment character of all time having his giant warrior princess wife really put it into the DNA of the series. She and the entire miclone/maclone society was what kept me sticking with Frontier long after it had dawned on me that I super duper don’t care for magic robot shows like this. I think when everyone can do everything and all rules can be broken, it becomes numbing. It’s my problem with a lot of later Macross series.

Sufficed to say, I will always come back to the Macross well and almost always be disappointed, but, it usually has enough strange and fun ideas that I’m happy I put the time in.

I watched that new Kite Blu-ray about two weeks ago. Fired up the uncut version and very swiftly switched it to the only slightly censored cut.

Anyway I got to the end of what I thought was the first episode and was like ā€œhmm, there’s credits, time to fire up the second episode and find out where it goes from thereā€ and nope, that was it. Bleak as hell.

Randomly watched the first episode of Dougram and not only was I into it’s very grounded military sci-fi vibes, but it’s really cool to see a bunch of mechs I was first acquainted with from Battletech moving around in 80s anime style.
