bocchi the rock can’t avoid k-on! comparisons and looks the part but it’s so much better because it’s bitter, funny, and feels true if not real. for example, it starts with a three year timeskip of practicing alone in a closet lol
for me one of the best things about the chainsaw man anime is following react-type channels / ppl on twitter and seeing their takes on it. i guess i just miss the feeling of following the manga two years ago and talking about it w people every week, idk.
obviosuly most of these channels are just very lame but there’s some funny stuff out there
New season of The Dragon Prince is pretty good but a lot of it feels like setup for later seasons rather than the self contained story the subtitle presented it as. Fairly compelling though.
Finished Pantheon, an AMC cartoon about people uploading their brains into the cloud, bringing about the singularity.
Overall I loved it. It is pretty horrific and bleak, but very engaging, and definitely one of the better attempts at handling this subject material I’ve seen. These kinds of “uploaded consciousness” stories tend to be full of eye-rolling NCIS-ass Oncelerifications of the internet, like your Ready Player Ones and your dime-a-dozen near-future Netflix sci-fi movies, but this one got it largely right.
Few standouts for me:
The actual process of “uploading to the cloud” is nightmarish, involving your brain essentially being melted as a machine captures an image of every neuron and every connection. You’re then killed as your head is completely hollowed out, and then a virtual entity with your mind is created.
The acceleration of time as a virtual entity is enthralling, as are the ways they have to change how they think about reality, in a world with literally no rules or physical laws.
Enjoyed the random girl version of Dermott from Venture Bros that shows up in this. Pantheon does a great job balancing normal people with super-powerful AI gods.
Being reset every day to work in the same office for all eternity is a form of hell I’d never imagined! That’s what we’re where for folks.
started on disc 4 (first disc of box 2!) of turn a gundam. specifically, i just watched the episode midnight sunrise. one of the best nuclear explosions i’ve ever seen in a movie or tv show.
it continues to be a great-looking show in general, of course. and it’s got great comedy, interpersonal drama and large-scale drama. it really is oneo f the all-time best shows
I just watched that UFO two-parter and it was so good, a highlight of the whole show’s run imo. The aliens with huge magical girl eyes were so good. They went all-out animating the alien planet too, super imaginative.
i watched a couple more episodes of turn a, and it just keeps getting better and more interesting
a minor character sacrifices everything, including his life, to save the world! the dianna/kihel situation keeps getting more and more interesting, especially right at the end of the last episode i watched where its revealed that dianna loyalists consider dianna and kihel to be “two in one, and one in two”
have you seen keep your hands off eizoken? i know they’re not really related or similar, but it aired at around the same time as mp100 season 1, and it was amazing to have two shows of such high quality and with such incredible animation at the same time, so they’re stuck together in my mind
lost my mind for a second trying to reconcile the fact that I felt like I was just starting uni when mob was airing and had graduated it when eizoken was airing but whew im not crazy they were 4 years apart
both fantastic tho for sure
I watched Tatami Time Machine Blues which was very cool, only realized halfway through that it’s like, a remake of a live action movie but with characters from Tatami Galaxy. Thats kind of a fun idea. Good opening theme song too
