Cartoons (Part 1)

,

toll spoilers in this post.

i’m slowly making my way through the Legend of Galactic Heroes prequel series, because if i’m going to push through the whole show i might as well do it in chronological order. i’m pretty far in now, at arc 7 of 9, and while there are things about this i like, at least on an intellectual level (the show’s sense of scope, its commitment to following every promotion of its main character from ground soldier to, i’m guessing, Vice or High Admiral, its anachronistic setting, its melodrama, its naval tactics fetishism, the charming and hilariously blatant hamlet/horatio gay subtext) i’m still watching it largely out of anticipation that it gets better in the main series. the novelty of characters sipping wine and lazily doling out exposition has worn out for me, and some segments are hard to watch, having been spoiled on better animation budgets. while i don’t expect either of those problems to change much, i’m hoping there’s gonna be something more–some new character dynamic, or shift in tone or writing, anything really–to elevate this beyond the blonde bishie MC’s struggles with being better than everyone else.

why would you watch it out of the intended narrative order? Do you also read the silmarillion before the hobbit?

the actual reason is that i torrented the prequels first by mistake and by the time i figured that out i was already committed. i am stubborn.

if that turns out to have been a serious mistake, then i guess that’s at least a new experience i get to have? if nothing else, The Mutineer (edit: oops, i meant Silver-White Labyrinth) was a pretty great way to introduce von müsel and kircheis

also, hey, that’s hardly a fair comparison :I

now, if you told me LoGH has some kind of star wars prequels/OT relationship going on, then i’d be concerned

they are explicitly a prequel series, that’s all. I think it is a fair comparison because the main plot starts with the first ova movie and ends with the last episode of the original ova series. Everything else is side stories. That’s why they’re called the Side Stories!

ok, that makes more sense. maybe a more prominent narrative arc will help this show more than i realize. i will probably wait until i get a little ways into the main series before i post about it again, then.

Boring thoughts about Kiznaiver:

  1. I like that because the cast are teenagers, everything has a melodramatic all or nothing tilt to it, which was especially evident in Maki’s arc. It’s old and trite, but it feels realistic, so

  2. If Yuta running into the sea isn’t the dumb anime gif of the season, I’ll be sad.

  3. If Tenga’s upcoming romance story isn’t pairing him with Nico, heads will roll

I really hope the ending of the last chapter of Lost Village is setting up a “duel for the title of chuuniest”

And given the last two chapters of Luluco I can hope too for a reference to Turning Girls.

side note: when did imgur start automatically converting gifs to webms without asking nicely first

Voltron is the Avatar hangout vibe/humor with some weird fake Vangelis/Mass Effect soundtrack and really cool action and mechanical designs and it’s finally the first ever good Voltron show but they didn’t use the real theme song dammit

I never do remember to think about cancelling Netflix, so I’ll have to check out Voltron later.

Just wanted to remind everyone that Girls & Panzer Is Good, and the movie is a spectacular two hours of stupid CGI tank tricks, fun new riffs on some of the minor characters, and the incredibly serious sports drama the franchise is known for.

I refuse to post in the Anime thread about Anime.

New Voltron is pretty okay

They are totally obvious about the whole Pidge actually being a girl thing, what with dropping two pretty big hints

!

This new season will be set 50 years following where season 4 left off. It will also be comprised of 10 episodes as a 5 hour movie, which will close out Jack’s story. It has been continuously described as a darker, more adult version of the original series, expected to be rated TV-MA.

dunno how i feel about that. guess its fine if by “darker” they mean “as dark as the original, only its real blood instead of oil”

I’m cringing.

Not really feeling Toonami’s new direction of shameless nostalgia projects, but I know I’m very much in the minority.

I tried to GIS this to see the character design (having no clue how much Voltron media there is) and

The worst thing about new Voltron is the lack of Nanny

Kinda sad there is no prospect for more endless funtime Jack adventures, but I’ll take what I can get.

I don’t know what TV-MA adds to Jack, but esentially if it is an animated action series at or above the level of craft and detail that he brought to Sym-Bionic Titan then I am still stoked on principle to watch ten of them
