the tree of silver album leaves:

level music wallowing in repetition:

theme from losing your patience on a sweltering day in April 2009 (the 22nd, not the 29th):

a boss theme in a Bungie RPG that sounds like the final Oingo Boingo album:

Would folks like a shitposter’s bracket to work this stuff out in? We can give the crown to the Siivagunner rip of “Bonetrousle” that’s just “Unfounded Revenge”

There used to be this forum I hung out on back in The Day called Gamingforce Audio, and they had a thing going on where every week users would nominate tracks and then people would get to vote on the nominations to determine a winner for the week. At the end of the month, you vote on the winners of each week to determine a winner for the month and at the end of the year you do a poll for all 12 of the monthly winning tracks for the year to determine which was the song of the year.

Or something. It’s been something like 15 years.

Picks from the top of my head:

Blaster Master Zero 3 – True Final Boss

This track, like the battle it accompanies, is very thick on the fanservice (I love it)

The Adventures of Batman and Robin (Genesis) – Dark Studio??

almost any song from this soundtrack is worth nominating tbqhimo

Metroid: Other M – The Burning Lava Fish

My opinion of this song recently flipped from “ugh why does Nintendo keep including this dumb song from that dumb game with everything” to “this whips

Wagyan Paradise – Deep Sea

been a fan of this soundtrack ever since I saw the Micro Mages developer recommend this song like a decade ago

Heads Up friends have been stressed out about the recent competitions that put cool things against cool things and the only real result is friends feelings getting hurt but maybe not verbalizing that last part.

I get this. I had a moment with this recent one where I felt like it was all way too stressful competing for personal representation via consensus. Like I will probably neurotically edit my post, going through every Sonic CD track, weighing all my internal criteria, but I have to remind myself this is just for fun. Rats in a dumpster full of desserts while the world burns kinda fun. And I’m not telling anyone how they should feel about these things, no way, but ultimately it’s just really cool to see what people present and that’s the best part.* SB as a collective has pretty dang good taste and however it shakes out in the end, we can look back at the initial offerings and find something interesting and maybe even validating re: videogames as a thing to care about at all (something I constantly wrestle with). idk, I’m just typing this out, not trying to push back, just reminding myself more than anything that this is an entertaining and sometimes illuminating exercise more than a competition, every thoughtful post being valid and appreciated.

*formulasofsexuation already won with the Demon’s Souls character creation track imo so RIP everything else

I can understand. There’s a whole slew of reasons why someone might get stressed about polls like these. People develop strong connections to works of art and then if those works don’t appear to be valued by anyone else, that hurts. There’s salt on the wound too if you try to express why you appreciate something and it doesn’t seem to move anyone.

However, I personally get a lot out of these lists because it helps me see everyone as an individual. The treat isn’t for my personal picks to swim up to the top, but to have a window into what everyone else connects with. We all have different values and experiences. When I see someone nominate picks I don’t personally enjoy, I think “this person is kind of different from me!” instead of “this person has poor taste!”

As I said earlier, there are a lot of reasons why lists like these can make someone feel hurt and I don’t want to assume the causes, but I personally enjoy these lists and discussions.

This poll in particular is fun because I can immediately experience what someone has chosen and it usually takes me less than ten minutes!

If there’s a recommendation to address this please make it explicit (or speak up if you are one such person)

Mitigations:

  • limited nominations to four per person (everyone can be heard)
  • weighting more randomly and/or fairly (could use e.g. YouTube views as proxy for popularity)
  • categories so each track wins something each week (Jackbox-y)
  • anonymous voting (done)
  • alternate form of voting like a batch of ranked choice each week so decisions are less disjunctive (been a while, will think on it)

Ultimately, though, it’s voluntary. I think the “result” of an exercise like this is exposing new people to the nominees and giving structure for critical discussion in a way that catches more eyes and entries than a flat thread about vgm.
