The loss of the boomer is one of the worst things about new Gears but the rest of it is still real good. At least we’ll always have the COLE TRAIN BABY WOOOOOOO!!!

like it’s nice that Forza and Gears and Halo are actually good again as of the past couple years after a five year period in which they couldn’t seem to do anything right but it seems like the absolute most they want to deliver is their big 360 games but turned into Microsoft Office
it’s funny for all the talk about how no one can justify budgeting single player videogames anymore, Microsoft’s response seems to be “yeah no shit but guess what we do know how to do”
Games-as-services or whatever have actually improved a lot in recent years when I think about how many current Evo titles have managed to become like the canonical version of their respective franchises without too much teeth gnashing, and I actually like big-budget shit, I wish it were just like 20% less conservative

My take on Forza is that Horizon is way better than the mainline games precisely because it’s full of all the weird shit and lets you drive shitty cars all the time instead of whatever extremely constrained esports bullshit 7 was trying to do. Gears 5 would probably be a lot cooler if it came out like, 5 years ago since it has really limited open world shit in it and that would’ve probably been cool before we lived in a world where everything is games-as-a-service and a bloated open world trainwreck. I guess I’ll take “conservative but still good at its core” over what they did to Halo though, which is making it feel like the most soulless Halo-themed Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare mod in the world and focusing the multiplayer around some weird MOBA thing (wow, exactly what I wanted!!!) and 4v4 cramped arena combat instead of, you know, shit people actually liked like Big Team Battle CTF on big ass maps

yeah horizon 4 is unbelievably good and it does that in spite of having incredibly heavy handed Player Empowerment messaging which I thought was unbearable when I tried the demo of 3 but actually works with the whole trashy british club promoter thing they have going on now
I’ve really never been an Xbox guy (I’m the right age and type of nerd to have basically looked down on Microsoft for an unbroken string of constantly changing reasons for many many years) but Horizon 4 was probably the most fun thing I’ve played out of there since the first Gears or Halo
but when I think about how maybe my favourite ever online shooter (after Titanfall 2 (RIP)) has been able to get by just charging for new characters and tweaking the maps and being really actively maintained for like four years now and I hope they never make a sequel, I’m less skeptical of the service model than I used to be for sure
I spent most of my time in Horizon 4 driving around in incredibly shitty hatchbacks with gross anime paintjobs or RIP PAUL WALKER YOU LIVED YOUR LIFE A QUARTER MILE AT A TIME I DID TOO I THINK THATS WHY WE WERE BROTHERS written on the side of my Nissan Skyline and doing illegal street races dressed in the loudest outfit possible so I really appreciate how trashy it lets you be

My major problem with Siege is that they fucked up Terrorist Hunt and that’s like, at least half of a Rainbow Six game and needs to be very good or I’ll be upset. I never really played any more of it because I was so disappointed!! Titanfall 2 is probably my favorite online shooter since like, UT2004 or Halo 2 so I guess I’m pretty boring. I also really just don’t give a shit about competitive games anymore though like I’m still pretty good at Gears and I was pretty good at Titanfall 2 but I just can’t get enthusiastic about PvP anymore. I partially blame the endless hell that is playing a Call of Duty on consoles when half the people are using a mouse and keyboard anyway for this.

I don’t have a PC anymore and I refuse to give Ubisoft more money so that ship has kinda sailed lol
I’ve tried five of these so far and every one of them is a more polished worse version of another game lol

yeah i don’t engage with phone games for entirely this reason.
well, that, and because there is no phone game that fun enough but also not distracting enough that i can play it in small chunks and not either run out of time or play that instead of doing things i’m actually supposed to be doing.

in fairness I think this might be more about what apple is inclined to fund, dandy dungeon and six ages and dandara were all phone-first and very good in the last year alone

dandy had some phone upsell shit that i just can’t engage with, even if not egregious. dandara i’d rather play on a system or pc, but six ages looks cool.
I’ve played few phone games that are better for being phone games as opposed to PC/Console games, but some of my favorite games of like the last 5 years have been phone games
