pommy, whether in dragon, catgirl, satan, christ child, even penguin forme, spends every server room bombing mission and every boss fight cowering in the corner, completely out of anyone’s control, and those server room bombing missions and boss fights together make up something like 40% of the game, so i have gotten to spend plenty of time sitting back and watching jay bugs as “bomber man” get his shit kicked in by anime wrestlers over and over again from the pommy seat this week
“Hudson Soft was severely hit by the collapse of its main bank Hokkaido Takushoku.”
it collapsed in 1997 i think. between 1997 and 2000 there were about 20 bomberman games released alone.
i found it weird that so many people regarded bomberman as like, a less popular gaming mascot. growing up i thought he was mega popular because id see him in so many gaming magazines and things. it turns out the reason why is because hudson soft was pumping out bomberman games by the boatloads so hed always be relevant. im unsure how many game development divisons or whatnot they had (i mean they made a whole console and a ton of games for it so they were likely a big company) but i imagine it was a quick turnaround on a lot of these games.
64 has my favorite singleplayer because it’s sort of an oddball. it’s more openly exploratory and puzzley, less emphasis on blowing up all enemies (though there are some cool/tough boss fights)
relatedly:
mod to make custom parts show up in singleplayer. my Bomber has a knight helm, a (purely cosmetic) sword & shield, and a pretty dress :3
The Second Attack for sure has the best story in my book, it tries to do this absolutely batshit JRPG super sentai thing and I had a great time with it.
Bomberman 64 is cool but it’s one of those games where you have to collect everything to unlock the true ending. And some of the things you have to do is pretty cryptic!
persona are you a big/crazy enough bomberhead to have watched all of Bomberman Jetters
I would tell you about how my first big Bomberman thing is a Mac shareware game called Boom, which is Bomberman story mode except you’re Doomguy and you blow up imps and barons and cacodemons but I’m lazy and understand the futility of typing in “mac game boom” into a search engine
