Bloodstained: being a castlevania fan is a complex relationship

In addition to the new multi-player modes, Ritual of the Night now also has a free Shantae-themed equipment set, which I swear was made for me, since it perfectly matches the look I’d already given Miriam while trying to turn her into Anthy Himemiya.

Whoa I feel like I’ve missed a ton of dlc for this over the past couple years.

I want to dive back in but I saw tweets from Bloodstained speedrunners that say the new version is really unstable and prone to crashing? Might just wait for the next patch before jumping in

People had been complaining about stability and frame rate since the beginning though.

When I played the game like 3 or 4 years ago, I remember having at least 1 crash per play session

I’ve said it before (probably in this very thread) but I remember playing the PS4 version at launch and a woman in town having no eyes or eyebrows. Just black holes in her head. “Damn the people in this town really are suffering” I thought. Then they issued a patch and her eyes and eyebrows reappeared.

No complaints with my launch era Switch playthrough other than that rotating tower area seemed like it was making the console sweat like a Treasure game would.

I doubt I’ll go back to my PS4 save at this point, but I should try to finish the game one of these days. I got to the final boss fight and figured if I just got my shards up a bit more, I could pull it off. Then they, uh, severely nerfed a few of the shards I was using.

Weird thing to do for a single player game, but it killed my momentum.

The portrait shard had to be nerfed. It was stronger than the Crissaegrim, easier to get, you could stack 3 casts of it, and could be combined with any knife to permanently stunlock anything. Now you’ll need to at least get the bunnygirl devil transformation and a leveled up doppelganger shard to pull that off.

Hmm, can’t remember if it was that one in particular I was using, but I don’t recall it being Crissaegrim-y.

Either way, it kinda bummed me out! Ah well. It’s been long enough that replaying it oughta feel new to me anyhow.

Dang, why to my favorite subweapon! My end-game build was that + the holy laser beam you can control with the right analog + Crissaegrim-equivalent sword. Made it a breeze to plow through the castle!

Don’t really understand the point of nerfing a sub-weapon in a single player game though. Oh wait, they added a multiplayer mode versus, huh? Guess they’d have to do some balancing there then

Ohhh, I always wondered what the point of the bunnygirldevil transformation was. I figured it was just for people who wanted to have a different runthrough, like a Maria mode or something. Didn’t realize it had its own tech for runs, how neat.

And as for stability of the game, my memory was that on Switch at launch, it was pretty unstable. Mine would crash randomly if I read at a bookcase, so I would always have to make sure to save before checking one. PS4 version was fine though? Though both versions had really long load times. Then a year or so after, they both seemed pretty good and stable and I was able to play through PC/Switch/PS4 without problems?

PC version is definitely the most stable and fastest loading of the three though. Still need to try this new update myself though.

it’s probably also a callback to the various transformations you could get in order of ecclesia, too

some of those were really good, too! I also liked how you wouldn’t be attacked by enemies that you had transformed into

I saw that the official Bloodstained account said they’re working on a patch now to address the crash issues, so that’s good. I guess enough people seemed to think that this was it and they were just gonna leave the game as a buggy mess, that the official account had to officially respond.

yeah i out of the blue the other day saw a video saying “Bloodstained is broken, don’t buy it”, citing that it had apparently received its final update and major crashes weren’t fixed

edit: i should say a single crash, one that randomly occurs in an item shop

I played on steam deck a few months back and I don’t remember to many problems for my normal non-sweaty playthrough. I vaguely recall some framerate and enemy state hicups here and there like when a level pops or a shard spawned in but nothing truly game breaking.

That little skit at the end…more of that, please.

Also, this is giving “Order of Ecclesia…and all the rest!” vibes, which feels like the correct attitude.
