Bloodstained: being a castlevania fan is a complex relationship

I was kinda burnt out after Dawn of Sorrow, and among the ones I haven’t played always felt I might’ve missed something special in Ecclesia. Might pick that up soon, instead of another Bloodstained mode…

:tarothink:

Oh yeah, forgot about that. With all the other portraits being mostly kickstarters, I think there was one other (besides Iga) that really stuck out and I can’t remember why.

So many scattered touches to relish. Also just remembered Celeste Room’s which may not have any big secret but seems too “setup” as is, no one seems to know. Could just be some kind of personal kickstarter thing.

Ecclesia is definitely better than Dawn and Portrait, but I’d suggest going in with tempered expectations. One thing it does well is logically laid out midsized spaces like a monastery and a prison instead of purely a sprawling castle – but that may not seem as fresh given that Bloodstained also does that well (with the ship, the train and the twin towers). Unfortunately, Ecclesia also does a lot of outdoor and underwater areas which don’t do anything interesting and show up repeatedly with palette swaps.

Two of the kickstarter portraits are set up in their own room with a chair facing them for you to sit and admire them. I imagine those backers paid extra

I figured the same. Loved the cat ones especially w/Rose.

And chyeah nice, even more details like that ^. Gods they really “textured” the breadth of items/weapons/gear, etc. more than anyone would’ve expected.

  • The weapons’ description, when translated from Hex, says “o cknpw grdlz zwkj pupseul xrkvt”. Further decoding this text via the Vigenére Cipher (password: orchid) reveals the true description: “A light saber with immense power”

I liked how they leaned into the alchemy theme by making the Gold material one of the rarest two material drops. I dunno if they expected anyone to actually go through the mercury + dark matter alchemy formula though – it’s cool in theory but they didn’t remove the easier ways.

I went ahead and grinded the 27 gold to max out Alchemic Bounty for the fun of completely breaking the game’s economy. Despite that seeming like an absurd amount at first, in the end it only took 20 minutes of grinding with the right setup (i.e. after mostly breaking the game’s economy beforehand).

Also, what’s with that farmer just casually farming his tiny plot in front of still burning houses? And why do you never get any better seeds to plant for the entire game?

At first I was planting diligently until I realized that 50 corn is already more than I can possibly cook with and it has literally zero resale profit.

can some gently hint me what you’re supposed to do after fighting the twin dragons

Hints:

  • Did you just pick up an item that you were told earlier you needed for something?

  • Remember the far left of the merchant’s room?

  • Didn’t someone say something about a photo?

Actual solution: Bring the silver bromide to the merchant, get your picture taken, and then talk to the librarian.

Whoa wait what do I gotta do to get that good fast movement? I’ve already got the super jump, which is great, but a faster walk speed would be, uh, also great.

You need to complete a challenge found in one of the late-game areas ( Den of Behemoths).

Hahahaha damn, I was thinking “dang that fast speed would be really good for that ninja race.”

Yesterday, I used trophies as an excuse to play this game a little more. Now that I have them all, I think I am really going to stop until they add co-op or new content, or until I decide to try a higher difficulty one day.

A few things I hadn’t found wandering around and had to look up:

  • The place in Oriental Sorcery Lab where you have to teleport through that gate in the lower left corner of the room.
  • The place in Twin Dragon Towers where you have to teleport through the floor to get a chest you can’t see.
  • I hadn’t realized that you can fight a few optional bosses more than once, and in fact have to if you need the exclusive items that they drop. By the time I learned that, the fights took only seconds.

The money trophy seemed as if it was going to be a chore in a way that the others hadn’t been, but all I had to do was sell a bunch of things and then not save.

This game is tempting me to try the PS4 version of SOTN. This would be the third time I’ve purchased the game (though only the second time I’ve played it), but it’s discounted right now and playing on PS4 sure is convenient. I remember reading that it has some issues and a new translation. If I don’t want to hear the new translation, I can always just turn on the Japanese voices.

believe me, if you’re good with the reflector ray, you’ll be faster

It’s worth it to feel all the absurd rumbling Konami added to the game. They just absolutely went to town.

I just want to acknowledge that I was deep into a long psilocybin trip when I posted both this question and response, so while I realize this is unusually affectionate and out of character for me I stand by the things I posted on this website while I was extremely high

but playing this game sober now I still think it’s extremely good lol

Been flu-ish all weekend and what better chicken soup activity than a loose old 'Vania wherein I very quickly beefed up the portait shard and the medusa-head (c’mon) shard and now I’m basically invincible, cool
