I think the narration played a huge part in setting this up. Players are extending the thought process the game directly told them, which makes sense. One of my major hopes is that games, through direct conversation, can bring players into their subtext more effectively. And why not start by talking to them?

yeah i explored this in control the body after making games that try to wordlessly teach players things and found it really powerful too. somehow even when someone directly tells you e.g. how a mechanic works, it can still feel like magic to discover and it cuts out all this pretense of the designer trying to force or trick the player into learning it.
