The only game on this site i’ve probably posted too much about despite genuinely disliking is Cyberpunk. I was playing this to begin with because I was in the mood for a bioware ass game, and I really wasn’t when I tried it when it came out. I literally made like half a dozen posts on this forum about how much I love neverwinter nights and then talked about how this game reminds me of neverwinter nights!!!
I literally have written at least 15k words about all the things I don’t like about Dragon Age 2, of all games, but I still tell people I like it because I do!! It’s fun and Aveline is cool. A bunch of 13 year olds on tumblr were less thin skinned about that than male bg3 fans are, apparently.
Oh you’re making your dragon age 2 comparison from the perspective of liking da2 instead of thinking it is the cancer killing crpgs, I think thats where I didn’t understand where you were coming from.
To me there is a great gulf in basic competence and quality between the worst bioware game and anything larian ever did

the first dragon age and the third mass effect are both like… borderline OK overall, but with the caveat that a solid quarter of each is unbearably cringe, the quests are not at all nuanced and mostly designed for virtuous minmaxing, and any and all of the good writing is designed entirely around the companions which are knockoff joss whedon archtypes at best
it’s a very unmemorable era of CRPG design, and the games were generally better when they more closely resembled jRPGs which is telling. the fact that people were excited about reviving the kotor or baldur’s gate IPs was not encouraging in the first place, though I at least love everything larian does

im down to see people rip games a new one even/especially if they like those games after all but im never sure where to go when i wanna engage and post about things i personally enjoy about them and continually get responses like “not me!! i think that SUCKS” other than like, completely out of the thread
like maybe im just not invested enough to really go hard in the paint. but then if i was it would be cuz i like caught a bad case of thin-skinned gamer defensiveness so idk its a real selectbutton pet peeve

barely anybody is posting in this thread besides me to begin with because the game is old now, and all of you showed up because i won’t shut up
see I played almost the whole game with gale and shadowheart even knowing how on the nose they were because it felt like very well-drawn camp, but it’s just funny that there is such a huge audience for making party-based RPGs with romanceable companions and whatnot, yet almost no one can manage to actually ship a game like that anymore. this took a belgian indie studio a full decade to grow into. and it’s supposed to be people’s comfort food.
this is exactly why it’s bioware! that isn’t an inherently negative statement!
I think shadowheart is pretty funny and make fun of her/being the most popular romance constantly so everyone thinks I fucking despise her because I say things like “She acts like a dental assistant roleplaying a cleric of shar at the table” even though she’s in my party literally all the time so I can’t really hate her that much

lest i be accused of hating this game again here are some things i like:
the constant skill checks everywhere in and out of dialogue
shadowheart and lae’zel’s endless dyke bantering just fuck already omg
when i staked astarion in the heart
punking gale by slapping his hand and walking away
mind flayers
my drow monk
theres no alignment
they actually let you murder your party members or tell them to fuck off
the main character talks a lot and my voice is good and i like the stuff she says when you do stuff outside of dialogues
the comical amount of blood that sprays everywhere after every battle
watching people slide around on grease
talking to animals
talking to corpses
reading peoples thoughts
throwing a whole ass chest out of your pocket
when a larian ass skeleton joke chracter asked me what the value of a human life was and there were suddenly like 14 dialogue options like they were making fun of planescape

Yeah I’m glad I’m playing very slowly and in chaos multiplayer where changes like this aren’t really noticeable but if I was doing a more intense and focused single player thing the way they keep fucking with this stuff would be infuriating

The best thing is they fucked up the flag too, so even though she dramatically breaks up with you here you can still go back to camp and fuck immediately. It would be fine if there was a convo where you could explain your reasons to her, like the epilogue they replaced (?) where you explain to Minthara that you rejected Bhaal to be free of his influence and she understands entirely based on her experience with the absolute, but there isn’t, so instead it just doesn’t make any sense really. The 4 dialogue options they give you in this convo are so completely bitchmade it’s hilarious
At least one of my friends ran into a game breaking bug in act 3, was waiting for a patch, but then they did this so now she doesn’t care to finish the game anymore. RIP Minthara and Wyll we hardly knew ye
I bought this late last year, and I still haven’t started! I won’t be able to start for another ~3 months!

My friend was telling me about how the motion capture director for this game originally tried out for shadowheart, when she saw the gal who got the part instead she was like oh so this is who they got huh and was prepared to hate her but as they recorded the performance she was like damn this bitch is good, and beautiful, and now they’re dating. the more you find out about this the weirder it becomes. woman is going through it…bioware magic real. they done brought it back to the world…
also i started powerbombing near death enemies into other enemies to knock them prone and it’s very fucking good!!!

If you play as a drow woman this game is like a microaggression simulator and everyone’s shitty to you 24/7 to the point where I talked to like, two tieflings in the grove and decided I was fine with letting them all die because they’re just as racist as the druids. Bro I just saved your life do not be busting out this “Don’t worry I’ll tell them you’re one of the good ones” shit like not making a great impression here!
