Arcade rhythm games are actually tests for mecha control systems

I could make the equivalent of soylent dick but I’m afraid if I ever met nicole he I’d have to apologize

yeah i went down that route years ago (pc running empress + usb hack nonsense to use a ps2 beatmania us controller) and while it was fun it was really brittle

i guess i’ll look into infinitas with a keyboard for now. not looking forward to figuring out payment nonsense and i don’t think i can justify the cost/storage space of a dj dao rn but maybe it’ll scratch the itch? thanks for all the info!

shame i didn’t find out about the iidx machine in the burbs here til right before corona hit :frowning:

Honestly the ps2 controller for iidx feels okay enough and you can generally get one for much cheaper than the custom full sized ones. I used to have the arcade games set up but it’s been a few years and I’m not sure where to get the updated rips. I have the toolset to run them but I’m pretty sure I have no idea how to use it anymore. I remember it being kind of a major pain too, so I’m not confident I could do it again lol

I definitely spent a lot of time configuring popn music fantasia to run with the controller I made out of cardboard and tennisballs back in highschool which was a really good use of my time for sure

imo playing bootleg games with jury rigged nonsense controllers is a core part of the north american bemani fan experience

unbelievable how much easier the game is on a controller where the buttons aren’t made of tennisballs I sawed in half

All this rhythm game talk has me fired up and I wish I could put consistent time into playing IIDX again. I’m nowhere near as good as I was but I’m stoked I can still AAA Full Combo some easier 10s. Not a bad baseline to hold onto!

went to the arcade to play iidx today for the first time in six months, it was dead as hell and i didn’t interact with anybody. super chill. i wiped down the machine before use with disinfectant wipes and felt pretty safe.

here’s what my arcade looks like:

i play at the iidx machine in the foreground in the pic with both of them — the machine on the far wall has a bass platform but the one i play on does not, which is good for me because i am tall and playing with the bass platform is super uncomfortable.

i only played ten rounds. i’m still finding my sea legs again as far as reading speed, and my stamina is very lacking, but i was able to pass 7th dan and 8th dan again. i was 10th dan before i quit playing six months ago.

the 8dan course looks like this, if you’re curious:

yeah idk what to say, iidx just feels so fucking good to play. i was really having the time of my life. i’ve always been one to tap along on my leg or whatever to music and iidx is just that, pushed to its extreme and turned into a game. i had a really fun time today.

AAA’d a 9 (new masayoshi iimori track) and got a AA hard clear on this chart. really fun chart!! i’m thinking i might start going every thursday evening. i walked home in a drizzling rain (this arcade is walking distance from my house, i am very lucky) and there was a brilliant red sunset past the rain clouds and it was all just a wonderful way to spend my evening.

…where is this? (I will understand if you can’t reply publicly)

i live in the washington dc suburbs, but i’ll pm you the finer details

Oh hey, that’s my local arcade that I never go to because it’s usually always busy. I have no idea how they’re handling COVID but I assume they aren’t doing the free play nights anymore where you just did like $10 and got to play from evening to 2am.

yeah to my knowledge all the different types of event nights they do are cancelled and will be for quite a while. masks are mandatory, washing hands before playing arcade games is strongly encouraged and i was told that they have disinfectant spray + a cloth behind the counter for use with the arcade cabs if you ask (i didn’t ask, i brought my own stuff)

another week, another trip to the arcade to play iidx

i pushed it a little more than last week, which meant i got frustrated more than last week. i have no stamina anymore. 10s were wearing me out and 11s were kicking my ass.
i tried the 9dan course and failed out 3/4 of the way through the last song. i was 10dan before i stopped playing when covid hit. i was getting like -100 to -200 ex on songs i had played before. feels bad.

pulled off another 10 AAA, this time on primitive vibes hyper, which was the skronkiest song. also it was easy enough i wouldn’t be surprised if it got re-rated a 9 in bistrover

I went to the new Round 1 in Woodbridge, which might be a bit far for you, but from what I can recall it has:

1 WACCA
2 IIDX 27
2-4 Mai Mai Finale
2 Dancerush Stardom
2 Sound Voltex Vividwave
2 Project Diva Arcade
2 Crossbeat Sunrise
1 Pump It Up 20th Anniversary
1 DDR A
2 Groove Coasters (not sure about the iteration)

Not sure if I’m missing anything. It’s 6.4 credits for a lot of games, and I think it said $10 is 40 credits? So convert that as needed.

There are also 16 candy cabs of various fighting games and shmups, but the contents of the cabinets weren’t consistent. Different versions of Nesicas with different libraries, every other cabinet was inoperable for social distancing, and 8 of the cabinets I think were dedicated to classics like:

Was hesitating between this thread and input methods but this is a good shitpost for both:

There are a lot of dumb and arcane unlock methods in music games but this one is pretty high up there:

I dropped by the Round 1 the other week because I was nearby and curious how it was doing, and good news everyone: the pandemic is over! It was crowded.

It was very nice of them to give chairs to the DDR players.

heard the local arcade isn’t doing too well financially so i’m playing iidx a bit again to support. shaking off the rust, got a 10 AAA on a sightread which i was shocked by!

“Not an arcade game” caveat but holy cow
