I just saw the world’s first anomaly walker movie:
It was decent! Actually a very faithful adaptation of both the game itself and the whole anomaly walker concept, with much pleasure derived from trying to spot the difference before the protagonist does. For a while you’re pretty much just watching him play the game, like it’s the ultimate high budget Twitch stream or something, and you know what? That’s good clean fun.
I liked the context they added in the opening, starting off with a regular guy’s regular subway commute that turns intense when he gets a very personal phone call, and just as he’s rushing to go deal with that he turns a corner into the fucking Exit 8 tunnel. Loved the way that positioned the tunnel as the ultimate shitty commuting experience. Less successful to me was the way they grafted a mega-sentimental pro-natalist story onto it. That was a weird choice.
I liked the lead actor a lot. He showed a level of realistic fear and vulnerability that I feel like you don’t really get in a lot of male horror movie protagonists.
This is a novelization of the video game written by the director of the film. kind of want to read it cause that is so weird. i know this kind of thing happen in Japan, but it is surprising to see an English translation in a big book store!
‘He had gone the wrong way again. Rolling up his sleeves he headed back into the corridor. How long had he been here? A week? A month? There was no way to tell because he had been in the subway exit tunnel the entire time. He sidled up to the wall looking at every poster and tile one by one. Nope, no change there. The other man walked past him as usual. Wordless, expressionless. Was he human? Nope, no change there. The lights looked correct. The signs looked correct. The door was the same. No anomalies. He proceeded on and checked the exit sign. It was Exit 0.
