alternative games crit sites/blogs

hi hope this hasnt been covered elsewhere here

thinking on the number of folks migrating back to blogs re:cohost and also just the general collapse of games journalism sites to layoffs - figured it would be neat to curate a list of small scale alternative games media sites and blogs - ideally ones with rss

these are more or less the flavors im thinking of

https://aftermath.site
https://afterjourneysend.substack.com
https://bumpcombat.net
https://sidequest.zone
https://indiehellzone.com

started hacking together a little selfhostable rss reader thing for aggregating links and displaying them in an ordered way - may be neat to host that publicly online for folks. anyways if you have any reccs id appreciate it

tysm continuing to add all these as i see em. some of the wordpress sites like hingeproblems won’t be as populated because wordpress limits the # of entries to the most recent 10

something i’d like to add is a page where one can view all the sources it pulls from at once. you can already click the tiny → to go to a page where it’s filtered to just that site (though the logic doesn’t show every post its cached yet, just the most recent query)

Reverse Shot, a film criticism site I love, has been publishing pieces on games occasionally.

In a recent roundtable a group of writers with background in film criticism discuss cinematography in games. A much more fine-tuned discussion of form than what you usually find in games journalism. Some thought provoking ideas, including annoyance at the uncut camera movements in God of War, and a discussion of “player as cinematographer”. (I think they miss an opportunity here by not talking about screenshot modes.)

My favourite games writing on the site is by Sam Bodrojan, who has beautiful prose and a confident eye, displayed in this piece on Elden Ring. I eagerly await her upcoming UFO 50 review.

I also recommend searching their archive of film writing, where you’re bound to found something illuminating…
