AKITOSHI KAWAZU

I was too chicken to say I don’t need system data, but I refused to tell the game my sign or blood type…much like Kawazu I don’t follow the rules.

I chose Blue, whose goal is to find magic and kill his brother. Then I clicked on this lemon named Devin and took a spaceship to Manhattan, which has a shopping mall. I didn’t have enough money to buy anything there. I will never have a hot urban body.

I believe in the healing power of crystals in real life and believe Rune Magic will help me attain ultimate power in digital. I spoke to this person, who told me my fortune. Now I know a lot about Runes and were to find them.

The Skeleton Psychic told me it will hail tomorrow.

what plugins are you using? looking good

that looks like retroarch’s native PSX dithering. I adore it.

I got PCSXR with that PGXP thing but I’m not sure it’s the best deal for Frontier, it has some weird graphical shenanigans (nothing major, though) and I don’t know if they are caused by the plugin itself or the configurations

I don’t know if there is any game that accepts graphical shenanigans more willingly than SaGa Frontier. That said, last time I tried playing it was with ePSXe and it would not clear text after it was written unless something else overwrote it, so every text box was filled with characters from previous lines. That was kind of tough.

Also, when I first played this it was a rental and the disc would freeze right after you finished a “chapter” or whatever and you get that white screen. So, immediately with like Asellus and Amelia and Red but I could actually play for a decent amount of time with Blue and Lute. But on top of that I had normal SaGa confusion and I was maybe 13?

That’s my SF experience but it’s burned in my brain.

Yeah, it’s the Mednafen PSX core in Retroarch with one of the default scanline filters, I think.

The town of Devin (?) is filled with fortune tellers. I don’t wanna fight anything. I just wanna wander around talking to these weirdos.

Inside this building is a palm reading robot.

Is that good news?

Tell me something I don’t know, you flaky fern…!

Someone else please play through Blue’s chapter and share your fortunes.

So, I started a game of this on (checks dates…) December 2015. Damn.
Never got too far, but I have of course some screenshots.

Hobo’s config looks a look nicer than mine for screenshots. I was using some CRT filter that, in retrospect, looks pretty crappy!

I’ll post some, anyway!

I love the prerendered environments in this game. Feels like DLC for Final Fantasy VII

Ready to Frontier, ePSXe just keeps acting weird and crashing if I try to do anything outside the windowed game. Maybe tonight if I don’t fall back to RE7.

just do mednafen psx / retroarch mednafen psx core - epsxe gives me fits lately

also, @Iacus i love that filter, it looks exactly how it used to look on an early '80s magnavox - not the cleanest, but that’s not what i’m looking for with crt filters, usually! @HOBO, your’s look good too, very sharp

God damn that’s a good lookin game

imo SaGa Frontier 2 is the best-looking game on PS1

i’m not sure it’s even close!

Legend of Mana is actually also gorgeous, come to think

e: visually, this one is pretty hard to argue with as well

this is why I sort of hate all PS2 jRPGs, even though a lot of them were technically more interesting than most of the stuff square made in their prime

on top of being slower, PS2-era full 3D renders just do not have the art direction of the prerendered stuff on the PSX. even when that art direction is all over the goddamn place like in saga frontier.

and it follows the visual design/anime trend of the time towards clean, polished, mirrored, in opposition to textured, tactile, warm.

Yes! Now that I’ve posted them, I think both HOBO’s and mine look better because they appear slightly resized in the forum post. They look a bit muddier at full size.

really annoying learning this exists now and I can’t play it

Those maps, especially the overworld look amazing and almost dreamlike.

That lowercase ‘g’, though. I guess it’s due to sprite limitations in the bitfont but ouch.
