Todd McFarlane finally got on Kickstarter. This is exciting! I used to have all the series 1 Spawn figures. I wish I had kept them but they’d still be in a box in my closet or somewhere because I still don’t have anywhere to display them. I’ll probably get this new figure despite not having anywhere to display it either. But it will come in a nice box though so it’s basically storage ready.

Right before those hit the toy shops, I was at a comic con where they were the brand new hot thing. No one had seen them in the wild before. There was even a demo table with the cars and the play set. One of the bigger name artists that I was in line for a signature for—I remember it being Jai Lee (I was a big new X-Factor head) but trying to confirm the guest list maybe it was John Romita Jr—had just bought the full set (at 30-40 a piece that day), and was opening them up and playing with them as I was a couple people behind the front of the line. By the time I got to the front he had already broken Medieval Spawn’s leg off. We witnessed this thing go from hot item to instantly broken while we were waiting. My friends and I were bummed and assumed the line was shitty and wouldn’t go anywhere. 26 years later that was somehow one of the most influential action figure lines ever.
I still have all of that first series, and they still have all their limbs.
I did buy a pre-signed copy of X-Force 1 with the Deadpool card that day for $12 and that somehow became a thing other people want now. Always thought it was goofy that Liefeld’s signature was on the bag rather than the book though.
Comic cons used to be cool!

I still have the original Spawn and Violator toys in a closet somewhere, along with that gray exo-skeleton one. The only one I have out on a shelf is Manga Spawn. (My nephew loves to play with it whenever he visits.)

Manga Spawn was one of the coolest Spawn toys. I think they did another Manga set but I don’t think any of those came close to that first one
