Did you see Polar which is also Mads Mikkelsen as John Wick? It’s on Netflix. It’s not very good either. For all I know it might be what you’re talking about but I don’t recognize the screenshot
Yeah this is polar. it’s from the part when he’s at the school explaining knife fighting to the kids
Damn I thought there were two mediocre Mads Mikkelsen John Wick movies and started getting excited
This one is based on a comic book I think which is almost definitely why it sucks
I saw it, it is fine. It is a touch funnier than John Wick without being a comedy, and I think Odenkirk did better at the big fight scene than I thought he would, but the action itself in John Wick was much stronger. It is basically the flipside of John Wick as that was a movie about a guy who got out of the life getting pulled back into it while Nobody is a guy who successfully got out of the assassin biz and is so bored of life that he goes out of his way to overreact and put himself back into that kind of existence.
I think it’ll be a decent movie to stumble upon on tv or a streaming service someday and go “sure, why not” rather than go out of your way to track down, if that makes any sense.
Hey, is this where I can talk about the new Mortal Kombat movie?
Here’s my review: bad.
(It’s two hours of lots of “eh eh eh, didja see it? Didja see that article clipping of Kotal Khan?” visual easter eggs, a lot of really stilted shit-talking, and some admittedly decent fight scenes here and there, but get pretty dull.
It also leans so goddamn hard on Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 movie, particularly in the direction of Kano and Shang Tsung, but still manages to fall short. A whole lotta “we gotta train to be ready for Mortal Kombat!,” but then they decide to flip the script and kill off all of Outworld’s champions, averting the tournament altogether.)
Anyway MK11 is on sale regularly, just set the difficulty to the lowest setting and play through the story and DLC, it’s a better movie than this.
Girlfriend and I really, really liked the new Mortal Kombat. It’s not a “good movie” or whatever and I feel like that’s not the point anyway. I had fun all the way through. MK11 story mode is way better, of course, I agree, and is a must play/watch if you’re at all interested in it.
It made me think of how back in the 80s and 90s we (friends and I) wanted everything videogame to be turned into a movie and nowadays that’s kinda pointless. When everything was a pixelated sprite you were hype to see it in full realistic glory on the screen. Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat, Mario, Sonic - these things were cool but it felt like they were only cool to us because of our imagination and we wanted to see the blanks filled in for other people too. I mean, for ourselves too but like sharing the experience was a big part of it. If there had been a Pixar-level adaptation of Zool or Sparkster my parents might have known why I spent so much time on the Mega Drive, you know? Movies could communicate more back in the day.
Nowadays I don’t get why they make a Last of Us movie or show or whatever it is. The games already communicate everything there is to tell. Same with Uncharted. Why have Tom Holland in that when 3D-model Nathan Drake gets the point across much better? Stuff doesn’t add up to me. (I mean from a creative point of view. Of course it makes business sense to milk your IPs for everything they’re worth and get fans to pay for everything you can possibly put out there.)
Hey, that’s fair! I’ve honestly been wondering if my old heart has just crusted over from years of cynicism or something, given how many folks liked it.
I just…ya can’t tease a tournament and back out of it!
Nah, I think a lot of people thought it was a middling movie, especially among the MK fans. Which is fair because it doesn’t reach the heights of MK11. I don’t know how the general audience liked it but it seems it at least did well in terms of views on HBO and in theaters. Interest was definitely high, which surprises me. Are really that many people still familiar with MK?
I actually liked that it didn’t go the tournament movie route. Like, it’s been done so many times and nothing ever surpassed the original tournament movie, Enter the Dragon, for me. I mean if they had decided to only go with the cast of the original MK game that could have worked but they chose to cram a lot more characters into the movie and so I feel like this different story, where the tournament is being sabotaged really works. Gives the movie some more room to work with and situations other than “we fight because it’s our turn now.”
Anyway, I think I’m pretty easy to please when it comes to these kinds of movies. Movies that want you to geek out and just try to show you a good time. I’m super picky when it comes to serious movies, movies that have something to say. I’ll tear those apart if they don’t meet my expectations. But yeah, popcorn flicks get a pretty easy pass from me…
For anyone reading this interested to get into the most recent MK lore: I had a really good time watching the story mode of MK9 (which is just “Mortal Kombat”) and MKX, about a year ago. 9-11 are the rebooted storyline. It’s pretty amazing to watch how the storytelling and graphics evolve from title to title. So yeah, I’d actually recommend watching that on YouTube if you don’t want to get the games, although 11 and its DLC should really be experienced in-engine because it looks gorgeous and Youtube compression takes away some of that magic. But it’s all on YouTube and I think the whole saga is like 12 hours of video or something, it’s pretty crazy
What I don’t understand is why NRS isn’t supporting the movie via MK11. They’ve got all these guest characters or tie ins with RoboCop, Rambo and the Terminator but they can’t put Cole in the game with his sick body armor? I mean, granted he’s nobody’s favorite character and just a stand in for the audience but still, come the fuck on.
Wasn’t there an event where you could watch Tenet or some other movie in Fortnite? Why not have an event where you watch the MK movie in MK11? Have it be a cinema environment with all the characters that are in both the movie and the game. You’d see their silhouettes in the front row and they could if not banter Mystery Science Theater style (extra lines from voice actors cost money, I understand) at least show some basic reactions during certain scenes. It would have been dope!
I feel like NRS stretched themselves too thin to do something cool like that, probably. They’re probably working on their next game and don’t have the resources, seeing how it’s been half a year since they did anything with MK11… Sucks though
I mean they’re probably working on MK12 or another joker/Batman/the flash and friends beat each other up game and I kinda get the impression MK the movie was made in the capacity it was in a rather fast and low budget fashion.
So diverting funds from game dev as a promotion for movie that WB doesn’t have a huge amount of confidence in probably isn’t a safe bet.
Speaking of MK Still thinking about how in the last fifteen minutes the plot just stopped for the cast to appear on a green screen, have the lead guy say it’s time to wrap up the movie, and the rest of the movie is one on one fights that coincidentally would be way easier to film during covid than earlier scenes were.
Yeah I heard that green screen scene be described as the characters warping to a loading screen and that’s just the perfect way to put it
I kinda felt like Ed Boon was really behind the movie though and that alone made me think they’d support it somehow, even if the studio wasn’t all that into it. But sure, they’re probably working on the next Injustice because historically that’s the way it went, with MK and Injustice alternating, if I remember correctly. That or the Marvel game that’s being rumored for a while now
trying to think of how long this gimmick could continue. i feel like i would happily watch one of these things with david cross, but the rest of the main cast would be kind of boring. maybe tom kenny could do some funny voices? although the most likely to show up in the trashy DTV version of Nobody is Jay Johnston considering he is pro-fascism
in terms of other people who appeared on the show jack black is honestly the most likely to show up in this kind of role eventually, but i’d rather see either paul f. tompkins or scott aukerman do it. i mean how funny would that be.
going to just pretend this is the next james bond movie. he directed the only two good ones anyway
why does the director of r.i.p.d and the divergent series keep getting jobs?
