This article seems to confirm some of the fears I have about this game.
Does this battle system make sense to anyone? It’s like memorize arbitrary inputs to do moves? Why did this replace Virtua Fighter-Lite.

This game is a thousand cuts against me.
The economy of this game is broken. They hate the player. This took so much cheating. A black garlic is 11 yuan. This was 114,000.

Book method doesn’t work after patch you have to use two other selling things and you have to do it A LOT.
50 sets got me like 7000 yuan.

are you enjoying this game rud13? i enjoyed it overall even with my initial bafflement with the combat and as you say the silly economy.
although i think i may enjoy hoping for shenmue 4 more

I have been holding back writing many many words about this game.
I am have not finished it but after 18 years why did Yu Suzuki want to make this? Why was this what he wanted to make? It doesn’t say anything about Ryo’s character. It completely sidelines Shenhua. I have seen a dozen interesting plot points they have run by in favor of “Ryo has to get tough to beat a guy.”
Uh oh this is getting longer. Shenmue 1 is so rich of themes and expression of them. Shenmue 2 tries different themes to various successes and failures. Shenmue 3’s theme is what? It’s important to say good morning and talk about your day with your stay-at-home wife-girlfriend.

Shenmue 1: 11/10 Amazing high point of the art form video games
Shenmue 2: a narrative, critical, and public response to 1 that loses it’s way until it finds it
Shenmue 3: Fans waited 18 years for this and…I need more time to write and think.
It’s not good. It’s not even interesting. The most powerful public display is “Shenmue lol” which honestly is the way I could get enjoyment out of it if I didn’t think the first was 11/10. Take every positive we gave out in the Branson Podcast and throw it away and that’s the game that is called Shenmue 3.

well since shenhua has been given absolutely nothing to do the entire game it is only right the game does the only thing video games can do with girl characters.
If anything (anything) playing this game has given me perspective on how good Shenmue 1 is. The phone calls home are filled with little moments.
I think the most fun I’ve had in this game is looking for the little chicken in every single shop. That part is fun.
Like I almost appreciate Thimbleweed Park at this point and I hate that one.

Who knows what they were doing with that finale.
S3 is a unsatisfying coda to S2. So uhh…maybe don’t play it if you have any vested interest in the emotional stakes of the series.
I’ll still buy-support Shenmue 4 so who is the real idiot who doesn’t like things.
