I thought Rudie was the “you don’t need to beat games” guy, this thread is cognitive dissonance

7 hours is like the perfect length for a video game. Get in see a world have an adventure and reach closure. Probably have 3-5 mechanics and game systems to stretch and use.

To pull an example out of a hat say Farcry Blood Dragon which is like a 5 hour game. Usually at 5 hours it starts to get repetitive at 3.5 and then you have an hour of cleanup and do the ending.

I was just thinking how good is a Seven Hour Game. It is very good. That’s like 3 evenings? That’s a good weekend with a game. That’s one far too long session. Hip hip for the seven hour game.

I always say the perfect length is determined by the game and how long its systems are interesting. Linear action games are definitely suited for that length, get longer and any attempt at a thrust to the plot starts to dissipate (really seven hours is probably three hours too long still, even action games need fairly static plots bu the standards of movies). 2D platformers can be exhausted in about seven hours, too.

What other genres fit well at seven? Adventure games seem better suited to four-five hours, or much longer if they’re puzzle-based. Strategy games really want to be much longer.

Open world is where it gets nasty because the meat of the gameplay is an action game (asking for around seven hours) but the world fantasy & exploration aesthetic ask for much, much longer, so the player either has to get bored with the action before they are bored with the world, or the action has to scale like higher difficulty replays of action games (usually too obnoxiously high-tension (Souls games prove this out)), or cut the world fantasy short. It’s a tension that explains what a lot of people here don’t like about them, I think.

I was going to say Undertale proved you could do a JRPG in 7 hours.

DQ7 is probably the best that after the 6 hour intro each island is a 90 minute adventure.

I know I am speaking again the Megami but Shin Megami Tensei series are all far too long when you have a grasp of the battle system around hour 10 have seen some tricks by hour 20 and then are supposed to coast on that battle system as the plot wonders for another 40-50 hours. Then if you take that experience to another in the series well. I guess I figured out why I lose interest a few hours into each SMT game after I consumed all of IV.

I love games I can get through in the equivalent of an 8-hour work day. Sit my ass down after breakfast and wrap up in time for dinner, with some bathroom breaks and a light lunch thrown in there. Perfection.

I think about 60-100 hours is the perfect length

Portal 2 maybe? (I can’t remember how long that is).

Or the bleary night equivalent – Binary Domain, Silent Hill, SOMA, anything that descends spiraling and dark and works best when you’re exhausted and can’t think quite straight

Dog Days, so the airport fades out as the sun comes up

Portal 2’s biggest problem is that they tried to justify it at $60 by making it three times too long, if they aimed for 7 hours they’d have been much better off.

its 8 hours long though

hey now, don’t you make him feel guilty over his preternatural ability to stop and smell the wall textures, we should all be so lucky

SOMA was also 8 hours long for me, that game is good if you turn off the frictional monster.

Aviary Attorney was 6 hours if you went for all endings so I’m including it in this thread

Hammerfight was 7 hours and it definitely overstayed its welcome

Honestly I think my ideal game length is 3-5 hours.

oh, Waking Mars was perfect at 7 hours

A lot of my favorite games of the past few years are in this range, they achieve maximum ludo-narrative whatchamacallit by not stretching their clever bits into tedium.
