2D Beat 'em Ups that aren't Streets of Rage et al

At least Gourmet Warriors and Iron Commando are kinda cool. But yeah it looks like a bunch of stuff Piko has licenses for just cobbled together.

hope the nostalgia bait eventually gets to bionic six

shook my head when I first heard about it

seeing Bitmap Bureau is making it means it will actually be good, which is more than I can say about every other licensed beat them up post-Shredder’s Revenge (Toxic Crusaders will be good if you have bad brain like I do)

Golden Axe reference is cute

those are really nice pixels, but the start of the trailer did get my hopes up that they’d been insane enough to make a game with graphics made up of digitised photos of figures and playsets

how was Final Vendetta anyhow?

I personally cannot vouch for it but Murphagator digs it and that’s a positive in my book (please ignore that he broke the game and makes the grappler invincible 90% of the time)

Absolum is literally the only beltscroller you should be thinking or talking about this year

even Arcsys agrees, they’re publishing the game in Japan and Asia alongside their cursed looking DD reboot

unless you have a diseased mind like me, then you’re also waiting for Toxic Crusaders and Rushing Beat X

this would have been delightful

I’m gonna make a glorious return after not posting here for years to give Final Vendetta the praise it deserves. They nailed the feel with the controls, it looks great, music is good. Really the only complaint I see as reasonable is that I could understand if someone said it was a little TOO close to Streets of Rage 2. But for me, SOR2 never gets old so if you’re gonna do the homage thing, that’s the game to use as your model. I’ve been recommending Final Vendetta for several years now any time beat-em-ups come up, it’s probably my favorite of the semi-recent “modern retro” beaters, so I was totally thrilled to see Bitmap Bureau’s name with the new He-Man announcement.

Hi hi! Pleasure to talk with you all again.

In most other places I might get a little self conscious mentioning that I too am diseased enough to be patiently awaiting stuff like Rushing Beat X. But nope, not here! And how wonderfully weird is it that we have the whole SNES Rushing Beat trilogy on Nintendo Switch Online?

But I’m the kind of person who does things like grab the Karate Kid: Street Rumble on a whim cause mindless beat-em-up action is just what you need sometimes. Game wasn’t bad at all, I found the sprite art pretty well done and it was perfectly competent. I like that we’re getting enough of a mini renaissance that we’re seeing those kinds of games too!

Watching the Absolum trailer has got me kind of hype for this genre again, as someone who has not really engaged with it at all since Guardian Heroes and even then only pretty casually, what is a good entry point. I’m looking for something that has lots of Cool Guys and Beautiful Animation to look at, a somewhat more involved structure than just walk to the right, press a to punch press b to kick, but not the kind of thing that is going to drive you crazy with technical bullshit (I liked Guardian Heroes a lot, if that gives you a better sense of what kind level of complexity I have the patience for)

Maybe River City Girls? Streets of Rage 4? I don’t really have deep cuts to recommend but those are very solid.

I feel like shadow over mystara would be good here, though juggling inventory and spells and shit is a bit technical bullshit-y

i would say streets of rage 4 or the ninja saviours

SoR4 is the Absolum guys so yeah.

If you have a Playstation product you have access to Dragons Crown which is by Vanillaware and at least one of the Capcom DnD guys.

Scott Pilgrim is cool.

River City Underground is cool.

On the other end there’s Dragons Dogma….
