2D Beat 'em Ups that aren't Streets of Rage et al

Tecmo Knight (JP: “Wild Fang”) came out this past week on console as part of the Arcade Archives series.

Impressions:

Short version: plays weird but really really well, until the ridiculous and gross last boss(es); finally got through the end with a random super dragon powerup and what was possibly an AI glitch.

I can’t find the recent video of this that was going around, just this old one, but…

It looks alright?!

God I had so many of these toys as a kid. The “gross-out 90s” era of animation did a number on me.

Oh! There’s a demo out.

System requirements very vague. Well, guess I’ll just have to give it a shot. ^ _^

i saw a mega drive copy of cadillacs and dinosaurs on aliexpress (with box and manual, somehow!), and i assumed it was just one of the many streets of rage 2 character hacks that they have on sale there. but i looked into it further, and it’s actually a fanport that got released last year!

the sound is horrible, and it’s definitely far from arcade perfect, but it otherwise looks decently fun?

Forgot to say I actually tried that Toxic Crusaders demo.

The mechanics feel a little…eh, until you grasp that double tapping a direction + attack will pop up enemies, and let you pretty generously juggle them.

There’s a goofy mechanic where puddles of toxic waste will appear on the ground (sometimes from enemy attacks, usually broken barrels), and standing in it will charge up your meter at a decent clip. Can’t remember if it heals your or boosts attack or anything.

Presentation seems pretty good, though! It’s a little bland, but I wanna say it nails the Toxic Crusaders license…I think? I haven’t watched it in like 30 years, I dunno.

I keep poking and prodding at this demo

it’s like a fucking onion, I keep peeling at it and then another fucking layer shows itself

you can do air grabs? you can do running short hops into enemies and grab them and throw them before you land and start chain throwing the like that

the people making this video game are insane, but in a good way

i saw this and was like “ehh, i think i got my fill” but then new tee lopes music got me.

the comic panel stage reminds me - has any other game done the comix zone thing?
