2D Beat 'em Ups that aren't Streets of Rage et al

Incredibly, an OpenBOR remake of a Spanish bootleg arcade game by Duintronic.

Merso previously did TMNT: Rescue Palooza and a remake of Bloody Paws.

At least Buccaneers includes the original (that looks more fun?)

Very weird the energy that shot into my brain going “I had that toy.”

we’re here on the day

good-assed video game

I thought it was iffy and then I realized taunt builds meter and no, game is good

fucking banger Tee Lopes jams and also some Wu Tang

some suspect control decisions but an easy recommend, even if it’s 25 bucks to play some game you hate to Tee Lopes music

It’s also on gamepass for xbox and pc so low stakes to check it out

Enjoying what I’ve played so far.

Just dunno how I’m gonna do these “never get hit” challenges.

does it have rpg elements?

Only in that it seems like you gain points for your characters that upgrade some things in tiers (additional super meters, an extra life, things like that).

There are collectibles throughout some of the stages, too. Seems like plenty of reason to replay 'em (that and there’s an achievement, at least as fake achievements on Switch go, for maxing the levels of every character).

good game

developing a callous on my dpad thumb

turtles game is pretty damn good, the rat king’s flute plays in tune with the music so it’s never dissonant and one of the songs is in a 3/4 time signature. tee lopes know what’s up

Played through 13 stages with a full group of 6, that was a lot of fun

The taunt to refill special thing makes for an interesting rhythm of combat

They added assist moves between players, so you can revive and share health

The sprites look great and are well animated. It is kind of hard to tell the mostly identical turtles apart in the middle of the chaos, such is the nature of the beast

It’s all the fun stuff out of the arcade games without any of the quarter munching bullshit

The most important observation here is that Raph gives a Good German and is also 50% guaranteed to make the same WHAH sound that Alex makes when doing the Hyper Bomb in 3rdStrike

I just…
I just…
Look I’m a HUGE TMNT fan. Love 'em to death.
This game is ‘good’ ‘great’ even, but coming off the heels of SOR4 it’s somewhat frustrating to see the amount of praise going to the TMNT game by the larger video game masses, when SOR4 is clearly a better game, and people are calling Shredder’s Revenge the BEST BEAT 'EM UP OF ALL TIME. I know it’s a thing of it being the game of the moment or whatever, but Shredder’s Revenge isn’t even as good as Turtles in time.
While there’s a LOT to love in Shredder’s Revenge it’s really hard to ignore some boneheaded design decisions they made like slowing the game down with Taunt>Super, and so much they left on the table, like better enemy design and functions from the Turtles games this is supposed to be following!

Just GAH!

yeah, hard agree. put my thoughts in the games i played today thread, but overall i agree that it’s not as tight as SoR4.

before playing i watched the Digital Foundry review for about 15 minutes and, ngl, John Linneman saying this is one of the greatest game soundtracks of all time is…certainly an opinion.

I think I’m a jerk in more or less boycotting Western reboots of Japanese beat-em-ups…but I look at all of them and they all look like they’re missing the style and snap of the originals, and over-animating everything. (And I couldn’t play them even if I wanted due to the overabundance of big hit flashes, so maybe my occasional photosensitivity is just biasing me against them.)

Come to think of it though I did buy Double Dragon Neon back in the day and actually enjoyed it for its over-the-top silliness. ; ) And (oops that one isn’t 2D) at the time I thought River City Ransom: Underground looked kind of cool when I played it briefly on a friend’s PC.

On the other hand, the Double Dragon creator Yoshihisa Kishimoto’s own attempted reboot with Double Dragon IV had its own serious technical problems, ah well.
