2D Beat 'em Ups that aren't Streets of Rage et al

final fight 2 might just be the most boring belt scroller ever made

Actually being two player on the snes won it some points at the time.

It’s stroll through a famous painting moment was neat, and could have been a whole game.

The hard thing to gauge with beat 'em ups is that beyond just punch and kick they need some extra flare, something to set them apart or keep engagement. For older beat 'em ups it’s usually an X-factor of charm. The revivals though do a lot to borrow from modern games to spice up the formula. It’s sad that it’s mostly gone stagnant but I hope SoR4 rekindles the whole thing because they’ve basically died off but, when they’re good. THEY"RE GOOD.

I’d point to the fan released TMNT Rescue Palooza as another more recent stand out, though my love for TMNT is probably tipping the scales there.

this ruled when we played it together briefly. it was exactly what i want from a beatemup: brief, easy, packed to the gills with novelty and dumb visual gags

final fight 2 is better than final fight tbh

but you should probabl play it on hard

I just want to say that I played the gba port of final fight today and that is a neat game because:

• You can play as street fighter alpha Cody and Guy (with similar move sets to the final fight originals).

•There is a rapid fire option that makes the game very easy and chill to play.

I finally got this installed and config’d and running on the CRT and if someone had told me it had auto-saves and that the level select is actually a 16bit-ified TMNT 1 NES overworld map, and that there are like tons of harshly down-sampled voice-clips like some kinda PC Engine CD port, I would have played it sooner.

Can’t believe I haven’t brought up Data East’s RoboCop 2 arcade game, wherein you can slam goons into the ground. The Japanese version opens with a playable iteration of the first film’s ending.

i don’t know if anyone remembers fallen city brawl, which failed to reach its kickstarter target last year, but it’s been picked up by a publisher

here’s some unexpected news:

this rules. kuniotatchi no banka is the best kunio game i’ve played full stop.

this is cool but it’s a weird rebranding flex considering Misako and Kyoko get called out in RCG for having it be the only game they’ve appeared and been attached to Kunio and Riki in

I guess they announced RCG2 too. I’m ready to suffer for my art again

this game on kickstarter has awesome art, and thematically it seems pretty cool. in fact, i was made aware of it by an ad on facebook that described it as “streets of rage with delinquent schoolgirls”, which sounds like an enigma of amigara fault situation for me, right?
and then they had to go and ruin it all by adding something stupid like stat-raising mechanics
