It’s over. After stretching together all the plantes of the solar system and bringing them back to Earth GIRL’s six year journey has ended:
The final stage here appears to only spawn exactly once for players and contains a very Keita Takahashi letter from 2009. Skip to 3:40 in the video if you just want to read the letter.
Maybe it would have been more appropriate to post this in old SB before it locks?
“Winter 2005” probably marks the start of dev work/idea gathering as that was around the time We Love Katamari, Takahashi’s second-to-last Namco project, was released.
That ending/the letter was surprising and affecting. I almost totally forgot about NNB and figured Namco wouldn’t even bother to keep the servers up. Can’t think of anything to add besides Metafilter’s “.” moment of silence symbol but maybe even that isn’t appropriate.
I’ve still turned this on over the years to hang out with it now and then and check if any progress had been made. Had the iPhone app too, which I think is broken/shutdown now, so it’s really warming to see that this has endured. I never thought the game would actually make it to this point.
i said in the news thread, but this news just meant so much to me. reading that letter today, of all times, meant so much to me. my love for noby noby boy and the people who envisioned and worked on it is held on a place of the highest reverence. i just can’t think about it without sounding like i’m preaching it.
anyway here is the letter’s full text if you just wanna read it. courtesy of the lovely tumblr-person shinsua
“You can choose to do the things you want to do and the things you don’t want to do.”
I appreciate the way this is phrased, whether or not it’s intentional.
yeah, I’ve seen/read that letter yesterday and I still like what it said, and how it said this.
It very much feels takahashi-esque and is easy enough to be understood by children, I think.
so after duke forever, noby-noby, FF7 remake and Trico, we’re putting checkmarks to a lot of things, it seems.
