so real talk between working, looking after an ailing parent and dealing with endless legal stuff re: my dad’s passing i don’t get as much time to play games anymore but weirdly ended up playing 60+ hour peak ~ podcast in the background ~ games when i did?
elden ring, tactics ogre reborn and a weirdly soothing replay of death stranding this year wasn’t too bad
I couldn’t figure out an easily shareable thing so deal with this off kilter screenshot. The amount of random PC stuff I get to via itch sorta made this an unrepresentative sample, but I like that I played more demos than new games. Also impressed that I spent that much time on Globesweeper as I really just wanted that to clear that one giant puzzle as it is ridiculously tricky to do so and even with a save state every 1000 correctly marked mines (yes it is cheating, but a checkpoint every 45 minutes or so without a mistake seemed like a fair thing to make exist) it still took seemingly a ton of time to actually pull off.
i’ve only played like 30 minutes of it so far, but like ninja saviors before it, pocky and rocky reshrined just emanates quality on every level.
having to unlock arcade mode is powerfully stupid, though.
this, sonic frontiers, and masarada town story are the only 2022-released games i’ve played, i think. they were all good, though, so it’s been a pretty good year?
outside of needing to play at least a bit of a gazillion things for festival jurying, my trend of beating old console games on emulator i’d always been meaning to play but put off until now (i.e. Tomb Raider 1 and Silent Hill 1 this year in particular) will probably continue into next year. probably will try some Gamecube stuff since i never owned one, or a Wii for that matter. my collision course with F-Zero GX and the Metroid Prime series in particular must finally be met. i kinda wanna check out some more itch io stuff too - i really like the itch app and wanna dig further into a handful of things i have on there that looked interesting (namely Elephantasy, Lost in Vivo, and Mysteries Under Lake Ophelia)
re: Steam and whatever else, i probably will have to stop accumulating new games at some point because i don’t play games at the rate a lot of people on here do at all - so it’s just not possible for me to even remotely attempt to keep up with new stuff. and this problem has gotten worse and worse the more i’ve just accumulated random stuff from bundles and cheap sales and all of that. my steam library is so huge now as a result, and filled with things i know i will never play. this has gone from being like “omg LOOK at what i can play!” to being depressing to think about. it’s nice to have a novel experience with something you wouldn’t have considered otherwise but it’s not great when it’s buried in the midst of 100 other things. it’s just bloat for the sake of bloat, and i’ve been way too overly optimistic about the idea that i’d play or like a lot of the stuff.
the only big new game i made an effort to play because i wanted to this year was SIGNALIS, which is pretty good. def going to have to look at Immortality and Norco soon-ish anyway. i guess one of these days i’ll try out like Elden Ring or that Ghostwire Tokyo game which looked interesting to me. but i’ve never even played an MGS game or Dark Souls for more than a few minutes so those probably would have to go first. unless i stubbornly put off playing those longer just to annoy people.
2022 was the year of the GAME BOY. For about 9 months, I mostly just played those as part of a thread. I really liked those untrue Final Fantasys and the Jalecos. I didn’t finish the thread as I had planned, but I at least made it to the GBC. That thread has some of my favorite posts from people.
2022 was the year of playing games in Spanish. I played Dragon Quest Builders and half of Dragon Quest Builders II in Spanish. I played through Jak II and III in Spanish with the dub. I managed to play through Mega Man Battle Network and half of its sequel in Spanish. I played through half of the dubbed Metal Gear Solid. Why did I play only half of so many games?
2022 was the year of losing saves. The romcart I got for my GBA would lose saves all the time, so much so that I resorted to always making a save state on top of the in game state. Then, one day everything was wiped. I could still load up the cart like usual but all my saves and states were gone. I was at the part of 2001’s MMBN 2 where you’re on a plane that gets hacked by terrorists. That one probably stings the most. Losing my MGS save from a Retroarch reinstall was the second hardest to bear.
2022 was the year of putting things to bed. After getting burnt out on sampling so many GAME BOY games, I decided that closure was something I needed. I played a couple of “white whales” that persisted from my childhood: Jak II, Donkey Kong 64, Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2. I beat them all and found my estimation of DK and Jak to rise while my thoughts on Level 5 plummeted. It was a worthwhile endeavor.
