20 big ones: Daft Punk

When i saw the tag for “20 big ones” and I thought of the bands i could write 20 posts about 20 songs the only one that came up was Daft Punk (the next one might be The Replacements) Daft Punk are not just 4 pretty good albums but a series of side acts, a movie score or two, a phenomenal concert series, an anime movie music video. Daft Punk is an indescribable band and its hard to know where to start. So I’ll start with Revolution 909

Edward Birdsong: Cola Bottle Baby

I think everyone eventually finds a “Daft Punk sample source” video and has their mind blown. And out of all the songs Cola Bottle Baby is one of my favorites. I heard this in the first ever gay bar I went to after realizing I was gay so it has an extra special meaning for me. Recognizing it feels like sharing a cool secret.

Fun fact this was my first Daft Punk album. I found out about them via fucking YTMND because I grew up in the middle of kansas and didn’t have personal internet until I went to college. I have a vivid memory of listening to Human After All while reading the first volume of Akira in my dorm.

I personally liked most of the album. Luckily I didn’t know of any music reviewing websites at the time to tell me I was wrong.

I recently learned that Daft Punk used a Digitech Bass Synth Wah to give the album it’s distinct sound and now I want one lmao

How can I explain Random Access Memories. I remember the leadup being a huge deal. There was a 15 second preview that premiered on SNL and it was causing a lot of buzz. There was a music preview of “Give Life Back To Music” which contains the only exciting part of the album. Then the album came out and I tried to like it. All the album reviews said they liked it. But I didn’t play it the same as I did Homework or Discovery. I felt disappointed they didn’t do another dance album, because then they could have done another tour and I missed Alive 2007. There was no way they were going to tour with this stuff.

Daft Punk built a whole fucking special piano for the album. They had Georgio Moroder record into microphones from the 50s, 60s, and 70s for different periods of his life and you can’t hear the difference. I’m glad Nile Rodgers got to front the album and be in some music videos, he deserves it.

maybe a re-listen is in order. or maybe I’ll go back to my pile of gear and try to make something instead.

I love this song. Not sure I have much to add to it. The ambient wave sounds throughout are a nice touch, I’ve always wanted to do a track like this but sample the PS2 wave menu sounds.

you know what kills me:

the Twingo wallpaper in the background. with the old french numberplates, no less, and with the basic version black bumpers, which pop beautifully with the lush green grass and YELLOW PAINTJOB that screams bees and flowers and OF COURSE as someone who potentially has a gen A Twingo, you’d still have a cassette deck in that, meaning that YES INDEED you would buy everything on cassettes, like it’s a personal galaxy brain moment for me over here :servbotsalute:
