your turn
I’m already breaking the rules and doing just 50 because I had to think harder about what to include, thought that’d make it more interesting even if sometimes the answer is a conventional “top pick”
edit: also kept it to one artist/group, e.g. Paul’s Ram represents all of The Beatles, sorry. Otherwise this list would be entirely Prince and/or Mike Patton projects
ram is really fuckin growing on me
I tried to do this too otherwise ibopa/xitsj and Jamie Stewart solo would be on there, and pacific ocean blue
100 with no repeat artists was kind of hard, but these are all albums I have listened to the entire thing sorta recently & can stand by them one way or another
I could write a lot of notes but the most important one is to say that’s Liliput, the actual 1982 album, not the 1993 compilation that reused the same cover/title, although all the tracks are on there anyway.
Skylarking is so fucking good it feels like a cosmic anomaly.
Love scary monsters by Bowie too
Jonathan!
I’m always singing “It’s raining today, and I’m just about to forget…”
thanks minty!
I think I could cosign half your list and the other half is stuff I haven’t heard all the way.
Interesting that we have two Station to Station fans in a row…
That ellipsis denotes true pondering. I’m not begrudging anyone’s Bowie preferences.
i dunno i just kinda did this randomly/off the top of my head. also accidentally overwrote two other things i put on there that i’m not sure what they were
it means so much to me that you like cali girls
have you heard the new one yet…
also idk why but i didn’t think dear god would be your xiu xiu pick!! im actually not deeply versed on xiu xiu so this doesn’t really mean anything
i’ll do one in a bit but it might take a while i go through albums so slowly
I don’t think I’ve heard the new one yet what’s it called I need to join a mailing list or something
what did you think my xiu xiu pick would be
we’ll see i don’t know em well enough to say for sure! i guess i would have thought one of the first couple though. this might be because you were like “whew my song sounds like knife play”
idk about mailing list exactly, regrettably insta is where i go to keep up to date on australian underground releases. its called WHEEL OF ASHES though
dear God I hate myself was their return to form after women as lovers and air force which were fucking weak as shit at the time (I like them more now but they were huge disappointments on release)
grabbing new Cali girls now. Just love the fucking singers voice so damn much
it’s SUCH a good voice he can bellow
Boy Soprano is my first xiu xiu song but i never got The Air Force coz it was like $30 at the local indie record store when most albums were $20 or less. and it never got cheaper, i was checking for years
this is to say that boy soprano turned my brain inside out at the time but i can’t speak to the rest of the album. certainly your i luv the valley etc has a little more oomph
i think Dear God I Hate Myself is like my second or third favorite Xiu Xiu album. i honestly might have listened to it more than any of their others also. think i’ve said but Jamie Stewart is very underrated as a pop songwriter.
the xitsj I love the valley makes me want to hate the xiu xiu version but i can’t cuz they’ll never perform it with the extreme drum beat that drove everyone wild. like it was their show closer for years so the xiu xiu version just feels tepid in comparison. it’s been long enough thst I can finally appreciate it though.
also it’s an ironic song. so to hear it played in silicon Valley by someone who almost remembers orchard valley and to sing at the top of your lungs about a place that fucking sucks, and that every single person in the audience understands how it sucks too, is an amazing feeling
boy soprano is the high point of that era for sure
drum beat eh… i’ll have to look into this tomorrow
even this pales in comparison to the shows. the thing about ibopa and xitsj is thry fucking SUCK on album in comparison of their live show, even live recordings are hard to translate. the primal horny energy between jamie and the crowd back then was so fucking wild. but luckily for most of the world they don’t have the ability to make the comparison so shit won’t get ruined for them
when Jamie used to scream OHHHH!!! the entire venue screamed along and it felt like time stopped
shout out to my classmate on open diary who plagiarized the lyrics of this song wholesale and thought no one would notice
