10,000 Bulletins: No One Can Stop the Presses! (Part 1)

I continue to insist that Marvelizing the Doom lore is literally the most cliche, mass market facing thing they could have done with it and it is uninteresting by definition. I am so bored by it

yeah it looks dumb. even right when Doom 2016 first came out i was always skeptical of the Doom rebrand, and everything that’s come after seems to confirm my skepticism. i’m not sure Doom was ever a thing that needed an official relaunch, but it’s a lucrative name… so of course they can’t not continue to make those games. just like with everything else. truly dire.

classic Doom has this base of D&D campaigns and heavy metal covers…cheap, trashy entertainment. It keeps it honest; it appeals to adolescent urges because it really lives in adolescent aesthetics

Now it’s big & expensive and technically this is an adolescent aesthetic in 2020 but worse it’s also a middle-aged-adult’s aesthetic. It’s expensive and soulless and any counterculture glimmers are just buffed out by relentless focus on lore and scale

Doom Eternal feels like what we feared Doom 2016 would be. Not that nu-Doom isn’t that but it had the wits to fight itself

I’m kinda in to some of the excess like the space fortress in the shape of Doom Guys head and schlocky monster characterizations. The ā€˜deep lore’ was just a step to far and felt so much of grasping at being epic for the audience.

The best thing about 2016 was framing Doomguy as this guy tired of everyone thinking they know best about how to use Hell and is trying to just clean up the mess. Even being doom guy does not make him immune to the systemic oppression of capitalism. He has to take it like an adult that even if he is an errand boy he’s gonna at least get his job done.

are they gearing up for a DooM/WH40K crossover

isn’t that just DooM (or 40K)?

There’s that very thin line between self-serious and self-stupid and it makes all the difference between goofy-dark of Max Max, Judge Dredd, 40k (works for me), old Doom, and the grim bombast of Doom Eternal and Marvel movies. It’s cosmic Kirby next to Marvel movies; the world might be deadly serious to its fictional inhabitants but it’s vibrating in a quantum uncertainty between goofy & satirical and serious & epic; both halves are destroyed if you focus in on a part

i think you really nailed it here:

doom (1993) riffed on the satanism + metal moral panic of the 80s (and ironically was greeted by it’s own moral panic) and things that middle america moral panics over are inherently kinda goofy because the Real Transgressive Shit is mostly underground & invisible to fundie pearl clutchers*

so then all those boys grow up and want to recapture that sort of dangerousness so they think the way to do it is ā€œthe same thing, but more Epic And Seriousā€ because they’re grown mature adults now and want to be respected for liking doom/comics/etc this time, but they wind up jettisoning any of the campy fun stuff in the process

*i think the 90s gangsta rap moral panic is an exception here in that the forces reacting to it used a moral panic over violence as a smokescreen to suppress & dismiss legitimate social criticism

I like thinking about how SMT is exactly how fundies described Pokemon in the 90s

yeah

I think a huge amount of the Bad in pop culture of the last decade is adults trying to justify why they can still like media designed for children, or trying to put adult themes inside forms designed for the simple worldviews/lies we tell children

just say you enjoy media designed for children! you can still be an adult!

It’s so depressing to hear this from 20 year old kids re: Sonic. They need apocalyptic shonen pretension for cartoon mascot animals with a dozen points of articulation.

why can’t you guys just be like Doomguy and ignore everyone vomiting lore at you and just kill demons

I got into the Doomguy spirit after I was told I couldn’t shoot a hole in Mars and decided to shoot a hole in Mars

the problem is that sega showed everyone that this was possible and also really cool when they made sonic adventure 2 and everyone’s been wanting that high to return ever since.

hopefully, since they treat characters that debut in the idw comics as canon, they’ll start using that series’ tone in future games. i think it strikes a good balance between whimsical fun and shonen action.

! I think a piece of my brain just clicked into place

Is that what people like about Sonic Adventure 2, that it’s a more clear shonen plot with a more coherent endstage escalation than the first?
