10,000 Bulletins: No One Can Stop the Presses! (Part 1)

Frictional doing a bit of a post-mortem on Rebirth and SOMA. Frustrated to learn that their goals with the pregnancy themes and “mechanics” in Rebirth really do validate the dumb ass reactions I saw after that game came out, which were like “how am I–a man–supposed to relate to this pregnant woman?” I think there were other design choices in that game with stronger influences on how players could be engaged than a fictional layer about being pregnant, like the constant talking from the player-character, extremely slow early sections, low risk gameplay sequences, and kind of cliche melodrama. But reading this, they place a lot of stock into the explanation that this game didn’t hit for people because they couldn’t have a relationship with the main character’s unborn baby, which I think is just ridiculous sounding, makes Frictional seem super naiive and overconfident in the value of creating a narrative in games without strong support from their systems and mechanics. Rebirth has some really great moments, but none of them have to do with the story really.

capcom mini arcade thing that’s shaped like a control console from a 1970s spaceship and has a bizarre selection of 5 megaman games, 4 versions of sfii, and puzzle fighter

That’s meant to look like Capcom’s mini arcades.

Playing megaman x with a joystick sounds like hell

I remember I tried doing that as a kid because I had the DOS version of megaman x for some reason and I only had a flight stick on my computer

platformers are better on sticks and fighters are better on pads

Can’t believe this “Mega Man X Street Fighter” collection doesn’t have “Street Fighter X Mega Man.”

wow, just like everyone gets all these for free, don’t need a PS-Plus subscription?

I already own seven of these so that must be a good selection

By way of contrast I am of the opinion that this is so profoundly uninteresting as to be ennervating

this is how all companies should react to their consoles getting hacked

I think that’s how it was when they did it for the Uncharted games last year, yeah

I just mean it’s interesting to see that this is the result of emphasizing different parts of what was basically always there. Feels like a continuity or something even though it’s obviously totally changed, and not for the better imo.
