I haven’t heard much about tegra since the switch launched tbh, I think the form factor probably isn’t worth the silicon budget for those advanced process nodes yet
I don’t get the reference but bloodpotioned this on the assumption it’s very clever
I can’t imagine a world where nintendo tries to push their hardware. they like big margins on that stuff
people on twitter keep saying “I’m going to become the joker” in re: some nightmarish-but-probably-tolerable status quo being enshrined over the past year, and I was imagining being basically my age with my sensibilities but japanese and facing the total retreat of artistic expectations
Makes me wonder how it feels to be a dev for a Japanese game primarily targeting a foreign audience.
Remembering now Keiji Inafune and Kojima constantly talking about this impending domestic market change a decade ago and presumably getting fed up with their publishers or vice versa
The main benefit of this for me is that FF7R etc will get PC ports and I can hold the line on buying a PS5
Yeah, I remember some of those interviews too. It’s a very particular kind of aesthetic and economic alienation
Another thing I note is that From Software does not give this frustrated vibe at all, in their interviews they generally seem at peace with their vision and how it’s being received. Armored Core beloved in Japan and Souls games beloved abroad, just as expected and proper
Kind of like PC developers getting a larger audience in the 360 era (Bethesda, Irrational, et al), if you’re a Japanese developer conversant in Western design your ship has come in
I saw market numbers showing a total collapse of PS4 and Xbox One sales in the North America market in December; I bet this is an artifact of that plus the significantly undersupplied new consoles. I think you would have the same pie chart if you did PS4 vs Switch, NA, 2021 YTD.
Yup that was my thought. The PS4 did super well in japan over it’s entire life , FFVII did super well in japan this year.
It’s just that right now, you’ve either got a PS4 or you’re waiting and seeing with the PS5
If these sales trends continue by the end of the year that is probably a bigger deal but right now I really doubt it.
Japan has been getting embarrassing unit allocations for Sony hardware launches since PSVR, and they are selling out of all of them, mostly to scalpers. There were only around 10k PS5s available for sale in all of Japan for the month of December. Nintendo sold 300k Switches in Japan (standard and Lite SKUs combined) in the same month.
I feel like the only devs for which this is really true are From, Kojiima, and Capcom’s non monster hunter stuff, at least among major developers. you could add the kickstarter people like Iga and Shenmue I guess.
i was just thinking lately about the similarity of the game industry in Japan to Hollywood in the mid-century. though i was thinking of it more in the context of the way that outsider aficionados (in the case of mid-century Hollywood, French critics etc and in the case of Japan, Americans and Europeans) sort of created their own image of what the artform should be based on idealizing what they imagined the classic era of Hollywood or the classic era of the Japanese games industry to be.
Keep in mind all these numbers leave out PSN sales not eshop sales.
FF7R didn’t break a million physical sales.
Momotarou Densetsu broke 1.6 million.
This probably sounds really out of touch to the folks living over there, but are physical game releases still dominant in Japan in the same way that CDs were/are?
I mean because of mediacreate we have hard numbers for how much physical video games sold******
*- Minus Amazon and Rakuten.
they did a new one? or is this the train thing
You are talking about hardware sales charts but doolittle’s chart is about software. It’s ambiguous from the english tweet text, but the title of the graph translates to “software sales segmented by hardware”.
That seems like a more alarming trend than the usual end-of-generation cycle for Sony. It appears Sony may even have already gone past alarm to giving up on the market (starving it of PS5s, making Nintendo’s domination a self-fulfilling prophecy).
doesn’t really surprise me, whenever they post the weekly chart on gematsu it seems consistent with that
some four year old switch game selling 100x whatever the latest ps4 trending topic is
