I can’t blame artists, free money for people who usually don’t have much of it
mmm idk I can still blame them. nothing wrong with scamming rich assholes. the problem with nfts is that the scam is um. distributed. for lack of a better word.
and it’s a setback for anyone trying to make an honest living off their art online.
yeah i know of plenty of artists who are hurting for money who would never resort to it because of the adverse effects they know it can have on the landscape as a whole that they depend on and just the general uncomfortable feelings with having scummy NFT people taking over your space. and also there are plenty of artists who got into NFTs that aren’t necessarily hurting for money either. doesn’t mean the artists are the ones culpable for the ecosystem at large, but you are still responsible for the choices you make. (and i’m also grateful for the artists who were maybe curious or participated a little but then backed out of it… because i’ve seen many who doubled down even further into it).
if nothing else it is a hilariously fatalistic answer to “well what’s wrong with cashing out really”
Participating in a pyramid scheme with the aims of getting rich may be understandable when you’re poor, but it’s also very stupid and lends legitimacy to the pyramid scheme.
and it by necessity exploits people who are even poorer than you. it just sucks full stop.
fuck ubisoft and nfts, here’s a good game:
cuz i was curious i googled like few different celebrities with theyre name and nft in the search and every single one either bought nfts or made theyre own
pyramid scheme is a good term for it, i see especally 3d modelers make videos about how its the future and the best and only way to make money as a 3d artist (as if 3d artists never made money before?) and showing theyre collection and downplaying the downsides and it really does remind me of a friend who was in a pyramid scheme and had to push really hard to get people into it to the point that they pushed a lot of other friends away
like theres some 3d artists whove made millions off theyre works as nfts and its been shown both as “keep trying hard like this guy and some day youll make just as much money” and “see you can start making art as a nft and make money right away its that easy!!!” which contradictorys each other??? and is the same thing pyramid schemers say
anyways someone gave me the idea for a nft as procedurally generated slightly altered sopranos screengrabs and its very tempting
Am I gonna buy a third copy of this game? I mean…
Yeah.
returning to this (and not that I want to prolong this ugly conversation, but), it occurs to me that ‘Play to Earn’ is exactly what Steam has been doing for a decade, because of course Valve has gotten to a dozen iterations of a hyper-marketized take on this already. And, yeah, Steam Cards and the TF2 hat economy and the CS:GO gun economy certainly do something but they also fundamentally change your playerbase and at this point aren’t really new ideas.
Are they responsible for keeping the games alive for years beyond when they would have otherwise died? Maybe, but at what cost? And it goes hand-in-hand with Valve’s willingness to cede control of so much to the playerbase and the markets they create. No other publisher acts like Valve in that respect. Or owns a marketplace like Valve does, which they all jealously want but which is also largely responsible for why Valve’s culture has become what it is. Blockchain doesn’t magically make this happen if they’ve wanted and failed to do it for this long.
Read the part about that game “Axie” lol holy shit everything about the future is even more fucked than I imagined.

Nyarlathotep all day
Oh God one of the guys behind this used to be one of the worst Dota 2 commentators
I thought maybe this was a joke until I scrolled down and saw his official account replying to this
Halloween was filled with terrors but this one was def top 3 for me
I hate all this so much
NFTs are embarrassing on a species level
fortunately they’ll also make sure that our species won’t be around too long wallowing in that embarrassment
Yoooooooooo
hey, that’s a pretty novel use of tree algorithms
I guess the challenge will be to keep the growth pattern from being too predictable and generating too-samey results; they’re giving up a lot of the control that AI behaviors get them unless they step in and manage a lot more than this implies.
