10,000 Bulletins: No One Can Stop the Presses! (Part 1)

in no way would I wish this on them but we all know what shitty gamer people are like when stoked to a frenzy and this does appear to be a case where they have fucked around and appear to be in the midst of finding out

So this guy’s last game sucked so much his studio closed down and now he gets another shot a year later? It’s incredible how much this industry celebrates white male mediocrity when so many women and POC don’t even get a chance.

part of the problem too is that the job of “free agent studio head” isn’t so much to make a good game as it is to absorb liability, and if they thrust this position on a woman or POC it’s equally likely that it’d look like they were set up to fail. merit doesn’t even come into play, it’s more of like, an autonomic process of capital

At least they would be giving money to someone who wasn’t a mediocre white dude!

yeah but I think the better way to get that money is through eg https://sweetbabyinc.com/

they seem pretty good at actually getting paid in the AAA space and I don’t think they, uh, set up their talent to get sacrificed on a pyre for nothing

the number of not too bright looking bald guys in seattle whose lifestyles are subsidized as a matter of course is not really large enough relative to their profile to be worth getting upset about

“but his master chief renders tho”

I am being informed New World has a glitch where if you play in window mode and move it around you are unkillable in pvp

like all industries, a lot of people tend to fail upward. often because they’re good at playing ball and sucking up to management.

also this is a phenomenon that i know @BustedAstromech has talked about, where studios are uncomfortable and unwilling to hire new talent that doesn’t have a certain amount of experience within a very specific industry setting, which ensures that the same people tend to get hired over and over again. they just don’t fundamentally see most actual game development that is happening at this point as analogous to what they do. so a huge amount of the talent pool has all gone to “indie” development (or they’ve been hired to be like “chief epic win officers” or something and do nothing by Riot or Epic or Valve), which is starting to become a nebulous term in how much it describes a pretty significant chunk of the industry at this point. AAA is kind of suffocating itself because of its unwillingness to evolve or change, so it’s becoming kind of its own niche inside the larger landscape.

Job of studio head is about half setting hiring policy and studio culture and half keeping good relations with the publisher. I’d wager there are about three dozen candidates in the world that they would have considered qualified but if someone on the publisher believes in a candidate they can push for someone to jump up a tier, so to speak.

Two women I know at the department manager level have been aggressively courted for studio head roles this past year; they’ve both passed because it was too tenuous. Studio head needs the authority of seniority over their studio and the confidence that a shakeup at the publisher won’t leave them stranded. That pool of non-mediocre white dudes below the top level is so anemic it’s going to take time to build.

(And to reiterate, there’s an enormous talent pool of diverse indie game devs that are completely invisible to industry and whose skills just aren’t phrased in a way that a recruiter reading a resume can understand. It’s Seeing Like a State: in order to ‘efficiently’ hire game candidates they’ve structured the hiring process to create the kind of hire they’ve been suffering with and ignore everything else. If anyone in the indie margins wants to get into big studio work for a steady paycheck, now is the time. If anyone wants resume or interview advice I’m happy to help.)

I’ve seen a lot more energy put into diverse hiring in the past year than the previous decade, but it is necessarily netting mostly junior candidates. For this to have lasting effects the energy will need to be sustained for at least five years so that people looking to get into games get the message that it’s worth training to do so and people who have just started can become senior enough to credibly take positions of importance, which they deserve.

Don’t let up.

I swear it first caught my eye since it seemed to be a Sweet Home tribute with anime and just how explicit it was only dawned on me halfway through the trailer. Pixel art CG option is pretty neat?

Those are both pretty NSFW links.

I still don’t know the difference between the viking-themed God of War and the viking-themed Assassins’ Creed, and now that they’re both multi-platform, the waters are going to be even more muddied.

What’s the likelihood of Sony bringing Bloodborne to PC now?

I read that Horizon did so well for them in ROI it’s just hard to ignore the back catalog format shift money.

Bloodborne is not out of the question imo, the engine shares a lot with Dark Souls 3.

everybody’s porting and rereleasing mega drive games

above is the collector’s edition, there’s also going to be a standard edition for ps4 and switch, and a limited edition for mega drive. printruns are all predictably small, but there’s also a download version that comes out october 29th. and aliexpress mega drive bootlegs with boxart and manuals seem to be getting better these days…

will this have the lag issues the recent Cotton 2 port has? That is the big question.

i’d be very surprised if that were the case. saturn emulation is new ground, but commercial mega drive emulation has been around since the dreamcast.
