what I wanted most was to graft 3 more buttons onto a huge pad instead of yet another version of God’s most perfect 6-button controller
and the start button to be on the bottom side

the six button genesis pad should have six buttons all six the size of the three button genesis pad’s three buttons
Unfathomable buttons genesis
smh the 6-button pad only has buttons for the first 3 and last 3 letters of the alphabet. when are we gonna get a pad that includes all 26 possible face buttons?
I just can’t do a 40%, numbers on a layer is too much
I gotta be honest I always thought the 6 button pad made no sense, and I don’t like the three button pad either.
every genesis game I’ve ever played seems to assign buttons arbitrary, you never know if A, B, or C is gonna jump, attack, open a menu, or god knows what else. it’s madness! which is only compounded when you add another 3 buttons!
I’m sure they’re great for fighting games but like… idk, it’s always seemed aggressively anti-ergonomic to me.
the biggest problem with the 6-button pads, to me, is that they don’t work properly with some games unless you hold down some obtuse combination of buttons before turning on the console. they make some games totally unplayable, as a result.
I have no use for a 3 button controller that I can’t map shit to.
Give me a controller with as many buttons as possible.
Street Fighter
the Mode button
you hold down the single button made for switching modes
it was even a shoulder button on the original iteration of the pad
as far as people know, there’s only one or two games completely unplayable on a 6-button pad regardless of what you do and the rest are “hold button down while game boots”
I’m sorry if I come off as snarky, I’m really not trying to, but 95% of the library is totally unaffected and the other 5% has a pretty simple solution
technically, the games that don’t work with a 6-button pad are because they’re reading inputs in an out of spec way (or, the counter, the 6-button pad is kind of a neat NTSC-like hack of an existing standard and some games could have never anticipated it and didn’t have to worry about calling for inputs correctly)
In order to maintain backwards-compatibility with existing games, the 6-button gamepad acts the same as the 3-button if the controller inputs are read by the program a maximum of four times per frame. Reading the 3-button gamepad takes two cycles (once with TH=1 to read
,
,
,
,
, and
; and once with TH=0 to read
and
), and the 6-button gamepad allows this to occur twice. It then reports the state of the extra buttons when the TH line is changed after the fourth cycle.
Some games incorrectly read the controller more than twice per frame, which may cause them to read the wrong set of buttons. If thebutton is held in while starting the Mega Drive console, the 6-button gamepad will disable the extra buttons and act identically to a 3-button gamepad. (That is, the controller’s internal counter will reset after the first two cycles instead of after eight cycles.)
also also I would like to add that you don’t necessarily have to only thumb the face buttons, the size of the original 3-button pad and the layout of the 6-button makes it just as comfortable to lay them on your leg and use the pad arcade-style
I’m sorry apparently I’m grumpy about controllers today
hi winker
six face buttons should be standard. and two shoulder buttons
Just realized they put S&P on the switch but not Mischief Makers, pissed, disgusted
