I know I’m joking and I know you’re joking but my dumb shitpost hits on an actual issue facing a lot of phone and/or multiplayer games in that you have to convince people to break away from the games or franchises that they’re already committed to and take a chance and spend money on a thing that could fade away or be discontinued in 3-6 months

Let’s ask Sega how dumping tens of millions of dollars into that Sakura Wars phone game and shutting it down after six months went

I think I’m like personally mortified by the idea of wine being shipped on a consumer product, like it reminds me of every desktop Linux zealot I’ve ever worked with and through my own inclinations been able to gently appease and I feel like I’ve somehow enabled this

most people feel guilt about more serious stuff I’m pretty sure

Valve hardware only ever makes it to 95% complete so Wine is like a perfect fit for them

that’s absolutely on point, damn

like the worst part is I actually love the project on exactly that basis and think they do great preservation work but the second you start trying to commercialize a preservation project as an entertainment product I become very uncomfortable, because its goals are a pitiful fit for the userbase it’s being sold to and no amount of pitching will change those fundamental compromises and people will be confused why it can’t get better at its supposed aims

yeah this is definitely a deep seated professional conflict of mine

I mean, in some ways keeping the Index ludicrously expensive was great for Valve because the people who buy it will be more likely to live with or work around the compromises

that too! yes, absolutely! that particular tension is why everyone projecting weird populist values onto consumer technology (eg gamers asking why anyone would ever buy an apple product but then enthusiastically embracing this thing because it’s at least cheap) normally makes this conversation so enervating

did you tell them Apple makes the most powerful gaming portable with the biggest library just to see the look on their faces
