10,000 Bulletins: No One Can Stop the Presses! (Part 1)

my impression of it from trying one at xoxo (itself a gathering of the social groups of the expected developers and purchasers lol) was basically just “this is cute i guess?” like i’m glad it exists but it’s not a Revolution or anything, just an indie toy

and thinking about xoxo in this context is interesting – for years the portland dev scene was a tiny elite of semi-retired dads who had the benefit of getting to do whatever they wanted while the city stayed cheap, and now that’s finally starting to change, idk if it’ll look different post-pandemic

Yes, down with the Nintendo Switch Panic Inc. Playdate

there’s always auxiliary good from these things, like this genuinely neat gameboy-native SDK that analogue made to launch their endlessly delayed pocket: https://www.gbstudio.dev/

having to follow them for hints of actual industry interest seems very yuck though

3 years ago Quantic Dreams sued the (excellent) French newspapers Le Monde and Mediapart for libel after they published articles detailing the terrible work conditions at QD. Now the trial is happening and David Cage and team are apparently getting destroyed

Unfortunately there’s not a whole lot of info available beyond this french article :frowning:

https://solidairesinformatique.org/2021/05/31/quantic-dream-vs-lemonde-mediapart/

Among other things

  • the CEO said « I’m not under oath, so I can lie, right? » in court
  • David Cage left crying after people reported him saying « Quantic Dreams doesn’t make games for fags » and « in my games, all women are whores » and AFAIK he complained about the invasion of his privacy and didn’t try to deny he made these quotes
  • QD showed documents that worked against them by proving they illegally fired someone

God. The trial’s result will be known in 1 month and I hope we’ll get to know more then

I’m pretty sure this is only what I wanted forever? now one of my pillars of my presidential run can successfully be fulfilled (1. no videogame can be larger than a GBA game)

This is more or less how I feel about all consoles now

this feels so good to hate watch. I hope this destroys david cage’s career.

Finally.

In other news, The Pokemon Company is pushing some Eevee (sorry, Eievui) merchandise hard right now.

This is horrifying:

the Virgin Millennial Panic Playdate vs. the Chad Gen X Intellivision Amico

Panic Playdate — Name implies stress, childishness, and awkward interactions. The crank is a reminder of solitary acts of such depravity that I dare not sully your fair ears by describing.

Intellivision Amico — Name implies intelligence, vision, and amiability. The phone-controllers are a reminder of wholesome, voice-based social interaction.

Derailing the joke train to mention I still think the Playdate looks good!
I want to play Poly’s Roly Rumble.
I want that silly little yellow Game Boy, crank and all.

yeah I mean if the comparison on the one hand is to like… apple arcade (which people may fairly reject as a straw man, but is probably not too wide of the mark), then these look pretty inspired

The games look interesting! There’s no reason they couldn’t release them on… everything? Except the fucking crank which they added for the precise purpose of justifying the hardware. There’s no other rotary control method in the world, nope.
