Your song of the moment

enjoying this year’s wolf parade now that I’m catching up to it

spencer krug is probably one of my favourite musicians after DCB, I like so much of his overall sound and his lyric writing and I’ve been a fan pretty much for my entire adult life now

i dunno that much about Wolf Parade beyond hearing some of their first album years ago and listening to random tracks more recently (was always more of a Destroyer/Frog Eyes fan), but i listened to this one more recently and “Julia Take Your Man Home” was also the track that stood at to me. also love Chad VanGaalen

btw - who is DCB? i’ve literally spent the last day trying to figure out who that is and i have genuinely no idea. it’s been haunting my brain. at first i thought you might mean Dan Bejar but then i figured it probably isn’t that.

speaking of Frog Eyes

nope, I’m not that much of a Vancouver die hard (though I think he’s at the end of his rope here lately as much as I am judging from recent interviews); it’s the only musician that bejar ever tried to produce an album for, David Berman

I always liked sunset rubdown a lot more than krug’s other aughts projects but since Boeckner has been doing the lefty podcast circuit and they seem to have settled into their reunion act I’ve been giving the newer wolf parade stuff a shot lately and it’s p pleasant

i always confuse Sunset Rubdown with Swan Lake, the collab with Dan Bejar, Spencer Krug and Carey Mercer. i think they came out around the same time. i’m not sure if i ever listened to the Sunset Rubdown album though.

i was a big Destroyer fan for awhile, but my problem with Dan Bejar is he stopped writing songs at some point. everything just became a groove. and that worked well on Kaputt and i like some of his songs after that but i think he’s just settled into a particular thing with his songs that’s a bit of diminishing returns. though i kinda like what i’ve heard of his new album. but sometimes i listen to “City of Daughters” and then just get sad he doesn’t write songs anymore.

yeah, I think that’s the consensus – Kaputt is fantastic, everything before Kaputt is still pretty interesting, but every time I see press for a new record and try to get excited for it, it doesn’t really stick for me

tbh “Your Blues” is my favorite Destroyer album. that and “Destroyer’s Rubies” i think are his best. and “City of Daughters” is good too. “Kaputt” is cool but soured by its own success/the fact that he never evolved much in his songwriting beyond that.
