Getting lost and confused in the harmony while trying to sing along to their songs is one of the most intimate things about my relationship to the Beach Boys songs that I can describe.

Just listening to Sunflower by the Beach Boys today for the first time and I was STRUCK!!! by how contemporary “All I Wanna Do” sounds.
Really, it’s the stuff of hypnagogic pop–almost an Ariel Pink song like “Feels Like Heaven”–but in 1970

I have not heard! because this is the first time I’ve ever been in a beach boys phase! I disregarded them for years bc my parents hated them and I only associated them with the scenic waterparks of aurora, ohio.
