b/t ’ tokyo ’ and ’ friend zone ’ and the video for this song ( honestly it seems tongue and cheek and there are parts where i laughed ) i think i’ve resigned myself to the idea that thundercat has a nice voice but kinda leans into the ’ i’m an entitled nerd who thinks women should sleep with me ’ a little too hard sometimes.
The song is good, but when paired with the video and its explication by the director I like it a whole lot:
“The idea is a sort of dream chamber that has lured its creator into a near-constant state of isolation. She lives out her days trapped as the sole subject of her own experiment: the ability to simulate death. It is like a drug to her. Everything takes place in a small, claustrophobic environment. With soft, yet sterile visuals. Perhaps a strange combo to reference, but imagine the cover of the Rolling Stones’ Goat’s Head Soup and the character of Carol White in Todd Haynes’ 1995 film Safe.”
fuck yeah
randomly got the guitar hook from this stuck in my head and had to go listen to it. which also made me want to listen to this
and i suddenly realized 1. that America has the hook go from F major to C major while Janet elects to start the sample on the C major which… i think sounds better (forgive me if this is incoherent im fairly sheet music illiterate lol)
and 2. there is straight up a bit from gymnopedie no. 1 during the chorus?? how had i never noticed this
wow i never knew about this janet jackson song
its fun to think about some teen girl’s boomer dad getting angry about this
it was actually my way into the America song, i used to listen to it on a Now collection (i had a bunch of those on tape as a kid… i know the lyrics to more three doors down songs than i’m comfortable admitting). so it was my first exposure to Ventura Highway and also Trois Gymnopedies apparently
i never knew the janet track was sample
