Sheesh I wish Id spent my time with rpg maker trying to be unhinged instead of “good”.
I wonder if the ‘complete’ game I made entirely using the RPG maker VX demo got archived somewhere. I don’t have it saved if it did. I think technically the first complete western RPG Maker VX game.
You could only have like, ten maps? And you couldn’t save your, and all the menus were in Japanese.
But since the whole thing was writing a folder…you could just copy the folder before closing and whatever was in there was playable. So I made a game that had these huge totally repetitive maps, like a desert and looping dungeons, maps that would take forever to find things in.
Someone even played it. Nobody finished it though, god it was awful, but it was a fascinating thing to try.
the closest thing to a complete game i ever made was this simple experimental non-combat thing in RM2k where the player started from an oasis in the middle of a wasteland and had to conduct a magical ritual (by basically pixel hunting across a series of hidden maps) to restore the world to its verdant form. it was literally just to test and practice features but in retrospect i kinda created an RPG Maker walking sim before that was a thing
i also once made a couple of maps in VX Ace using simple line-of-sight stealth that was entirely through if/then variables, no scripting required, and worked surprisingly decent. Until suddenly it didn’t, and i couldn’t figure out what i’d done to break it. Kind of a bummer cuz i was hoping to use it for symbol encounters in a slightly longer game
my only computer right now is my steamdeck which hasn’t ime played well with VX Ace, I’d love to get back into tooling around with it once i have a more fitting computer and/or get a fresher version of RPGM (hopefully the ones after VX Ace don’t roll back the greater control over parameters, which made database stuff like classes, items/spells, status effects etc. much more interesting to fuck around with). I’d actually love to just make some tiny lil experiment games like the ones i mentioned above. though in the past ive gotten cursed with the same hubris that all RPG Maker makers seem to, where i get too excited when one of my basic stupid ideas works even half-decently and it’s suddenly hard for me to properly limit my ambitions…
i’d also wanna get over my resistance to learning sprite art since i know the RTP is generally frowned on (and tbf is usually a mixed bag of quality. Like nothings ever topped the default enemy sprites from RM99 (Ed. lol i meant 95 thank u Haleyor the default music set from 2k3, except maybe some of the console versions)
(speaking of i think it would also be kinda fun to make a short game in one of those versions. though also wildly impractical to design and impossible to export. but like IMAGINE having a lil game made in PS2 RPG Maker 2, which is basically like a homebrewable PS2 Dragon Quest V remake. i just think that’d be Neat)
i don’t think there’s an RM99, are you thinking of 95? because in that case… yes, absolutely. it fucks. impossible to pick a favorite
the detailing here is amazing
this is the best dragon i’ve ever seen
bad Ass…
you can dump the memory card data, technically? similarly you can dump battery saves from the cartridge on older editions. that’s how FORCE OF SEX was miraculously preserved
force of sex is truly one of the greatest rpgs of our time. the original meet ‘n’ fuck kingdom. it’s genius to name the protagonist of your sex game “Rail”
i just wanna rave about more RPG Maker 95 monster sprites ok alright ok
this is always how i’ll imagine earth elemental nymphs. this or allure unes from castlevania i guess same diff
OR as big golem boys like this handsome fella
look at this fuckin naughty catoblepas. what a nasty bitch. i love him
Happy Halloween ![]()
you can tell this demon is very sexy because she got her butt most of the way out
ok this is just Gallon from Darkstalkers. this is just Jon Talbain from Vampire Savior
clap for my rotten mushroom boys. applaud my horrible fungus children
Yeah it had a special cartridge that had a slot specifically for memory packs. You could save your game to the cartridge or the pack, and you could try other folks games games by swapping those out. It was the same format the Satellaview used, and they even transmitted a few games that way IIRC?
I suspect dumping them is trivial since I’d guess it’s just an expansion to the SNES/Sufami rom. Though this is also the era of bootleg floppy disk accessories for the Superfamicom that were commonly used for piracy and homebrew, so maybe it could have been ripped to that too? Seems plausible anyway.
apparently some rmxp games still crash at startup on some windows installations despite my DLL fixes. sometimes this is due to Data Execution Prevention and sometimes it happens because… well nobody knows why. but if it happens to you, mkxp-z is an open source runtime for rmxp, rmvx and rmvxa games and it works pretty well. it doesn’t have perfect accuracy to the original engine but the performance etc is a lot better

this is a link to the binary which i built last night. you can drop these files into an rpg maker game folder and run the executable and it should run the game. maybe this should eventually be something that’s not a google drive folder but idk
if you run into issues like text getting cut off or you want to mess with graphics scaling etc, you can take a look through mkxp.json and tweak any settings you want. in particular i think adjusting font scaling down to something like 0.95 is pretty useful
it’s also possible to make mac/linux builds of mkxp-z but that is an exercise for the reader. from what i remember, it’s only really worth using over wine if you’re having performance issues anyway
Hi! I’m investigating the preservation history of Dementia Praecox, the 2004 RPG Maker 2003 horror game by MrOuija.
I noticed your October 2025 archive inventory includes three copies. I’ve examined one preserved version, but I’m particularly interested in Dementia_Praecox.rar and Dementia_Praecox(1).rar.
Would you be willing to share those original archives, if you still have them?
I’m comparing versions to establish the game’s release history. I’ve already discovered some interesting differences between the catalogue date and the timestamps in the surviving game data.
Thanks so much for your preservation work!
@JokersWild you have been summoned i think
