Xanathar's Guide to Cleavin' a Goblin Clean in Twain (feat. D&D)

sale must have ended right after you posted D:

and i will have a look though here and see what i see

shit, it did! sorry!

I had a fever and plotted out a downtime one-shot where one party member is tricked into thinking they’ve been inflicted with a vampiric disease by a crew of Truman Show-esque imps; turning food to dust and souring beer with Prestidigitation as they are about to injest it (passing the player notes to inform them and which direct them to crumple them up and toss away as if it were the foul food/drink); manifesting a terrifying vision of an avatar of Lathander projecting from the icon on the tavern mantlepiece searching them out, slowly opening their eyes as brilliant blinding light pours out (with Minor Illusion); a Dream of a uncanny, vividly-coloured tiger panting and snarling and leaping to attack, waking up & seeing an Altered Self imp in in their bedroom with a similar, smaller form that leaps out the window to the street; a night duel with a wizened undead king in the streets of the town but it’s a poorly-animated skeleton manipulated by a few Mage Hands; fooling the character into believing they can fly with a Levitate; similarly, they can detect the thoughts of their party with Sendings; etc. The imps impersonate key townsfolk to continue the charade and advance the plot?

The climax was travelling to a nearby infamous crossroads to dig up a coffin of the last vampire staked to use the grave dirt to brew a curing unguent, but instead revealing an altar of Orcus and accidentally summoning up horrific barrow wights.

I wanted to loop back around about my previous post regarding that rick and morty 5th edition starter set…

The final encounter sucks. I’m not sure if it’s a joke on the structure of episodes or a goof on our DM’s part or what, but it totally didn’t land right. There’s like a kernel of a good idea to it but it gets undermined by throwing in an overpowered NPC ally to offset how tough the monster is.

ok so i played judge dredd: the cursed earth. it is an incredibly difficult game, but it has made very clear to me how exploration games might work. nice~

fun time d&d pranks: While the wizard is busy casting a Gate spell, just nonchalantly ask them who the ruler of Sigil is, anyway

i’m even less likely to get players for this than for all the other rpgs i have, but i’ll probably get it anyway, as long as it’s not too expensive

Wonder if it is just gonna be the two books combined (which is what the image looks like) or any significant editions.

Still have yet to get to play this but will probably buy it anyhow.

good news: it looks as though I might get a chance to finally participate in an AD&D1e game at some time in the near future!

bad news: I might also have to DM said game.

any suggestions as to what module(s) to consider?

For low levels, i’ve had fun playing the Basic modules In Search of the Unknown, Keep on the Borderlands, The Lost City and Journey to the Rock but i know the DM who ran them put in quite a bit of extra work for some of them, so i don’t know how good they are to run as written.

I guess the famous low level AD&D modules are Temple of Elemental Evil and Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh?

Looking at the published modules for AD&D, I wonder if it was actually supposed to be played at lower levels.

Yeah, that B series are the classic starting modules, but they’re technically basic rules so they might need a tiny bit of tweaking.

The N series could work too.

There really wasn’t a lot of low level stuff published.

It might be worth hunting down some early issues of Dungeon.

If you’re going to look at Dungeon magazines, tenfootpole.org has reviewed every issue. There’s a summary post highlighting the ones they liked best, search for “The Best Dung” to jump to the actual list.

There’s a best of list from a different site linked at the bottom of that post too.

Also i’m curious, why do you want to run AD&D?

I had a lot of fun DMing Tomb of Horrors as a one-shot for a bunch of folks who’d never played 1e(or even 2e) before. If you did go this route, I’d recommend letting each player play two characters, because, uh, they’re going to lose at least one of them!

Off the top of my head I think the U series and L series of modules are for low levels. I second Dungeon mag as well.

FUCK YEAH good luck. My ambition for this quarantine is to actually get my DMing in shape for 5e as well.

If it’s online and need another player, I am desperate for more D&D, since half my games are now cancelled till further notice.
