I’ve done some gigs with this and am super happy with it. Honestly thinking about buying a backup. It’s like my ideal no-nonsense metal guitar.

It’s got a nice, thin neck, too.

Somebody on Reverb gutted a Cyclone and put the body up for sale, so I grabbed it to shove some Jaguar pickups into at some point. This is a pretty decent comparison video of some different Jaguar pickups. I kind of like them all, but for overdrive, I like the Made in Japan Stock the most, but the Fender U.S. Hot and Johnny Marr pickups are nice, too. For clean, I think Johnny Marr and U.S. Hot sound the best.

i started playing my strat with fuzz for jazz, and i like it >:)

my epiphone sheraton still sounds best loud and clean thru a fender-deluxe-style amp. body unfortunately still too big for me but im working around it effectively i think, i figured out where to anchor my pinky to get my picking optimal.

is the anchoring specifically a jazz thing? I think switching from mainly playing an ES style to strat is what got me to stop anchoring

it’s moreso a benson picking thing, here’s a massive jgbe thread on it, but basically it looks like this. reverse pick angle + picking from below the plane of the strings

i’ve never been able to play the ‘normal’ way and been doing this for quite a while. for this style anchoring the pinky on the pickguard makes a big difference to comfort and speed imo

this is maybe understudied outside jazz circles, despite the GOAT rock guitarist playing like

Ordered an MG-73 and a Classic 70s MIJ Mustang.


Also got an OK deal on a Fender Deluxe Cyclone but it needs help. The refinish on it is terrible and gummy and sticks to your flesh and clothes, it has several gashes in the body, and worst of all, it’s fuckin’ candy apple red.

Going to see about having these gashes filled in and having it refinished, but I’m not sure what color. Maybe green or like, grabber blue. Or charcoal frost metallic with like, lpb or ice blue stripes.

i’d not give a fuck about the dings but if the paintjob is literally uncomfortable then fair enough

i got a questlove/ludwig pocket kit and the value for $299 is astonishing (snare, kick, tom, floor tom, hi-hat, ride, seat)

the assembly instructions are a breakneck video that’s shot backlit and the hardware is all painted black so my sympathies to any parents putting one together on a holiday

the tuning “lesson” tells you to find a note you like which seems like terrible advice for a beginner. i discovered my snark clip tuners work OK, though!

yeah! i’m already getting remo mesh heads to quiet things down and looking into wiring it up as a hybrid kit. i may not even need a brain if i can just solder triggers up to a microcontroller and flash a MIDI shell on it

cymbals are the part that’s hard to upgrade without eclipsing the entry price but i think used is the way to go there

I had been watching this listing on Reverb for a Fujigen JMG6 for a while and finally put in an offer when Reverb alerted me that somebody else did. I was curious about it because Fujigen is one of the companies that manufactured guitars for Fender Japan and they apparently have a pretty good reputation. I haven’t seen much out there about these guitars, though.

Aesthetically, it’s basically an MIJ Classic 70s Mustang, but the fret has a 10" radius, it has a Tune-o-Matic bridge, and it has Fujigen’s “CFS”, which is, according to Guitar Hakase:

A Fujigen-exclusive technology introduced in 2002 in which the frets are driven in a curved arc starting from the nut. This allows the strings, which are stretched from the nut to the end, to be perpendicular to the frets, resulting in a clear sound and rich sustain regardless of the position. The disadvantage is that the frets can only be replaced by Fujigen.

Whatever.

There’s a satin finish on the neck, so it feels pretty nice to play, as well. I just wish it were lake placid blue.

They were made around a decade ago, but there’s no sign of them on Fujigen’s website.

been mucking about with my string gauges on my strat. currently rocking the following set:
9.5 - 12 - 16 - 24 - 32 - 42
it’s mostly 9 gauge on the bottom, but the top 2 strings are from a custom set of 7’s I got from stringjoy. (the custom set was: 7 - 9.5 - 12 - 20w - 28 - 38)

i was startled that this sounded way less jangly and more balanced than my old strings. come to find out I basically rediscovered balanced tension. so all the strings have relatively even feel and output, making it sound more pianistic kind of. about 16-17 lbs of tension per string.

if you want to try this out then D’Addario has a set of balanced tension 10’s that are cheap and have a good balance (the 9’s and 11’s are less optimally balanced imo but worth a shot).
you can also buy single strings from stringjoy in a variety of weights. (i stocked up on 9.5’s, 12’s, 12.5’s, 44’s)
Right now it seems like Fender Super 250 strings are dirt cheap, so I bought a 3-pack of 9’s to use as the base.

my next string change on the strat will probably be: the Fender 9’s with a 9.5 and 12.5, maybe a 44 for tighter low E string.
on the sheraton I’m sticking with: the D’Addario BT 10’s, with the scale length it comes out to a similar tension as the strat.

one final note, stringjoy advises you to have wound strings with 1-2 lb heavier tension than the plain strings, because wound strings have more flex to them. but i think that’s a marginal improvement in feel and maybe wouldn’t be an improvement in tonal balance. dunno.

Haha yeah, I saw the Adorama one a few months back right before I got laid off and was going to grab it for the body but CME had their Competition Blue Classic Vibe, so I had grabbed that instead (I might still grab the Adorama one at some point, though, since it leans more ice blue):

Instead of the Daph Blue stripes they’re Olympic White which is OK, I guess. The fretboard on mine was pretty dire, though – several areas with chipping at the edges, very dry, and very pale and ashy-looking. CME recently released their Competition Orange with Dakota Red stripes Mustang that I want to check out at some point but I’ll probably wait till they start showing up used because I’m not paying almost $500 for a guitar with a fretboard that looks like it was hastily pulled from the side of a sunworn station wagon from the 70s.

Competition Orange is pretty wicked.

(It’s frustrating because unlike Pau Ferro, Indian Laurel can look pretty decent so there’s that chance you’ll get one that’s really nice and dark).

It has lots of knobs and sliders and a few buttons and that should let me make more complex stuff in Bespoke.

Twice as many knobs and sliders as my current device = twice as much quality, I think

This is the thing i forgot to bring to Seattle for you to play with. It rules for use with Bespoke, yeah! it’s great because you can set any of those buttons/knobs/sliders to basically anything in bespoke.
