has anyone used these novation launchkeys, how are they? i ruled them out because they seemed super tied to ableton.
also my DT 770s came in, they sound fantastic, the correction with Sonarworks is much more subtle and when I toggle EQ off i can mainly tell that it brings out the treble and bass punchiness (snare and kick drum). It sounds good both with and without EQ. the isolation is a big step up allowing me to use lower volumes. Next I’ll try it with CanOpener Studio and see if we can get it to open up with crossfeed between the speakers.
edit: canopener is even more subtle than sonarworks but I can definitely tell in A/B testing that there is a bit more openness and feeling of ‘speakers’ rather than ‘headphones’. seems beneficial for mixes. is it worth $40+? idk but hey i spent the money. I think I’m gonna stop thinking about this now and just default to: Sonarworks ON at all times, CanOpener on in my monitoring chain, and double-checking mixes with actual monitors.
I haven’t used them but they don’t look too bad for DAW control - you’ll probably have to do a bunch of mapping to get it to work the way you want in your project but once it’s mapped they should work like any other MIDI keyboard with knobs
got a free mpk mini :o someone from my trans support group bought it from a pawn shop originally and then gave it to me since it has bad memories for them. it’s sort of beat up, the keys are extra janky and bad, and the pads are insensitive.
~ battlestation pic ~ {check out those improvised bass traps behind the monitors lmao}
I’m still getting used to everything on it but it sounds fantastic
the main issue I’m dealing with is how to dial it back so that I can incorporate the m8 if I need to - it just takes up so much space in the mix that I’m having trouble doing anything other than a kick and hi hat, which is great for jamming out but not so great for planning arrangements
bought this a few years ago and its quadrupled in cost since then, i have no plans to sell it because no more will ever be made, hoping someday i’m brave enough to mod it to have a stereo jack bc the documentation exists online for it
(maybe should have recorded landscape but who cares)
a little trivia about that device, it was manufacture in a few colors and made of plastic
i bought the chrome one without doing a ton of research bc i found it at an amazing price
just before release they found that the metallic coating was short circuiting them, the original units used two AA batteries, so a slight “modification” was made by the manufacturer
aka they cracked a hole in the back of the cases and fed two wires attached to AAA batteries into it
you can still see the impressions in the material where it indicated AA batteries
my unit also sometimes shorts when i change the volume, i should try to clean it out soon
Oh hey i have a silver gristlism, so i should check that out. I also have a buddha machine 1 and 4 and Glass one, and the black metal one that someone made. i love those little things.
3 weeks later and i found someone local selling an ER-301 (for like £500 cheaper than anyone on reverb, honestly the market for these during covid is bonkers), so now my setup has completely changed. oops.
