im still waiting for the behringer 909 though
so like months ago @meauxdal posted an LSDJ-esque portable tracker device that trash80 was working on and I have now preordered and am in trash80’s discord
and like, a fairly large part of the discussion is hating on teenage engineering and specifically the op-z

i mentioned it in a post above but i am seriously both stoked and anxious about having an expensive modern synthesizer being shipped to my house right now. this one:
like… holy shit. i’m going to do all of the things. it’s not “sexy” (not a bad thing obviously) because it’s not analog or by elektron or some fancy toy, it’s like… a real fucken tool. i am anxious because i feel like i have to somehow justify it, but… yeah it’s not really like that. all i need to do is have fun. i’ve been making music my entire life, why shouldn’t i fuck around and find out?
i have felt like i am not “allowed” to have nice things and if i DO have nice things they will break so i’m trying to get over that
hmmmm
so the behringer k900fx amp i got back from my dad … kind of works? but it randomly starts popping and hissing and it’s fucking inexplicable.
there’s a roland kc-400 for like 200 off nearby that was just posted on craiglist. i don’t think i can let it go, fuck. i would get the behringer repaired but i actually think this particular model is a dud. i’ve read several other reviews that cite the same thing. the pops happen mostly when you crank the volume and then give it fast attacking and decaying signals, or significantly overdriven sustained vibrations. they are fucking unpredictable and legitimately frightening.
i opened up the amp and it looked perfectly fine, but it’s not reliable and i don’t trust it. the hisses and buzzes and crackles are (not really) tolerable, but the BANGS and POPS are completely unacceptable and render the entire amplifier effectively worthless.
the roland amps are world famous for being reliable and they sound great, so… fuck. do i need to spend even more money? probably
to be extremely clear, there is nothing wrong with any of this. i’ve been debating about what sort of gear to get, what would help me, what makes sense. there’s a lot of stuff by elektron specifically which is like… mind-expanding gear. but it’s also sort of an entire workflow. that’s good! and it’s actually stuff i personally want! same with teenage engineering op stuff sometimes.
anyway i just want to be direct because i’m not trying to shit on any gear whatsoever. i have a weird relationship to this stuff personally and there’s a lot of reasons for it, including
i am not “allowed” to have nice things
i’ve been getting back into eurorack stuff recently (and selling off a lot of stuff i didn’t use much like my digitone), and it’s expensive but like it’s been really nice to have this thing as a hobby and just pinpoint the exact sounds i want to work with.
other than a small sequencer module that is on backorder, i am basically finished with my setup and i’ve been really happy making music again.
Definitely curious about keyboard amp situations. For the longest time I just had a bass practice amp that was mainly only good for solo stuff unless it was really well mic-ed up. Lately I’ve been using a 50 watt Crate amp which is too fucking heavy for what it is, but actually being able to run both channels of my mixer to it is great. Right before lockdown I got a 4 channel Peavy amp which I haven’t been able to really try out because my apartment walls are way too thin. It was cheap and less bulky so hopefully it’s a winner.
ummm
this thing sounds like the fucking LORD
it seems to be impossible to make this thing sound bad???
i’m sure i’ll find a way though
(that’s a test recording i made just now… wow)
just fucking around with a guitar thingy

did a music stream with the modx

I love when you receive a synth and it just Sounds Good
I’ve dealt with enough synths to brace myself for the possibility that it doesn’t sound good straight out of the box, I guess the last experience I had a good out of the box experience with is actually the microfreak
I did end up ordering a zoia because I was thinking about whether it was a good idea to get another NTS-1 to do a distortion -> delay -> reverb chain on my other gameboy and realized I could just patch it together on the zoia
now that i am officially a gearhead i need to see videos of your setup in action… or better yet a spacetown livestream
i impulsively bought the behringer 303… i have this silly idea of trying to use it as a bass guitar like it was originally intended before acid happened.
I need to get a new webcam but I’ve been in the mood to livestream again! I stopped when mimi got sick because it was too stressful to like, leave her for an hour but I think it’ll be good to start it up again
Currently have an Arturia MicroBrute on lend from a friend and did a direct sound video. Probably should have varied the arp a bit but it gives you a good listen to the low end and the LP filter.
I also got the EVO4 I ordered weeks ago. It’s a small audio interface from Audient that has internal loopback which I wanted to have for doing things like music streams. It is also really small and light. Haven’t had a chance to do much recording with it yet (played some bass through it) but the DA is very good to my ears for such a small and cheap box. I finished mixing my latest project through it and am very happy with the results. Review here https://www.musictech.net/reviews/studio-recording-gear/audient-evo-4/
i really need to get an audio interface soon, the scarlett 4i4 seems like the best value, probably worth it for the midi connections.
i really don’t need an audio interface other than my ones from work but i want an rme ufx+ and their best-in-industry driver support
Not saying you shouldn’t get the Scarlett but you can get MIDI to USB for under $20 on its own
i’m pretty limited with usb slots on my laptop, and being able to have everything going i/o of one device is appealing, and means i can leave it all plugged in.
