doctor rat is so fucking good. it does this thing where every odd chapter takes place inside a labratory from the perspective of a rat thats been experimented on so much that he loves it, and the animals in the lab are rebelling and doctor rat tries to stop them
then every even chapter is from the perspective of an animal outside the lab, and they come together in this really powerful way. its one of my favorite books about animals, but it gets REALLY detailed about some of the lab stuff. he based it all on real research papers that he read
id do an audiobook of cows in a second i have read that book out loud twice now to different people hahaha
placeholder to remind me to post about tnt (again)
A few things I’ve read lately that I’d put in this category, in order of how much I liked them (best first):
The White People
I've heard this story mentioned many times over the years, but I didn't get around to reading it until this weekend. Written in the 1890s by Welsh writer Arthur Machen, it alternates between a definition of sin and a surreal stream-of-consciousness journey. It made me want more, and from what I can gather The Hill of Dreams is the next one I should try.
Follow Me to Ground
I like the writing style and the way the author doesn't overexplain the odd things that are going on. While I enjoyed this book, I suspect Rainsford might produce a better one in the future.
Helpmeet
Some interesting body horror and atmosphere but I found this ultimately unsatisfying.
A Touch of Jen
None of the characters are sympathetic but I found them kind of compelling with occasional insightful moments. However, when the story gets “weird” it’s unfortunately in kind of a boring way that ruined things for me.
the white people is so fricken good. I loved the detective stories I’ve read by Machen, like The Great God Pan (what the f!!! so scary) and The Inmost Light.
